This problem is usually resolved by updating your BIOS. Go to the start button > programs > Accessories > System information. When that window comes up, scroll down and write down the BIOS version and the date it was installed or issues. Now go to the link below and put in the model number of the laptop, don't worry that it is HP's site, they own Compaq. The next window will give you choices, choose software and drivers. Now choose your operating system from the drop down menu. Look below for your choices of drivers. There will be choices for BIOS updates. I am assuming you have Windows 7 on that system. Make sure that you know if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit version. You can find that out by going to the control panel > system > look at the window and will tell you what version you have. Once you know that, then you can choose the correct driver selection....there are a couple of choices, just choose the newest BIOS update, it is dated 2010. Download the file to your desktop or a folder of your choice, once it is downloaded, close all open programs, make sure the battery if fully charged and you have the laptop plugged into the AC outlet. Now run the program and follow the prompts, that should fix your problem. Good luck

HI There,
Unless someone has gone into what is called your BIOS and disabled your hard drive as a recognizable device, your message most likely means that the WIndows System on it is corrupted enough (maybe virus) that the "boot sector" of that system can't be seen by the computer and it could also mean that your hard drive is ruined.
This isn't a problem you can just find a quick fix for. My first concern, if I were you, would be important data you needed to retrieve. In that case you would hope that someone can put your hard drive in an external enclosure, and just get the data files off it.
If you have a Recovery Disc of any kind for your Compaq, you could insert it and start from that disk and it might repair and restore the files that are needed to see the Windows system and start the laptop again.
It's very hard to say exactly from a distance with what you've told us.
Best Regards,
