PS2 CDs are in fact DVDs, whereas PS1 CD are CDs. The DVD reading part of your laser unit is failing. You need to replace the laser unit. This is not necessarily an easy process as you may also need to tweak the positioning of the laser as well.
It's quite possible that your PS2's chip is malfunctioning, thus not recognizing original cds. Pirated CDs don't have a protection, thus the chip can't de-protect the original cds, not allowing them to be read.
Another cause would be that the discs are damaged.
You have either a scratched, dirty, or worn out lens if the disc spins and does not read. If cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc does not help, I would recommend either buying a new PS2 DVD drive or a new PS2. A new drive will be about 5-25 dollars and you will either have to find somebody to, or you yourself put it in just don't destroy your PS2 in the process. You can find PS2's for about 40-140 depending on fat or slim and new or used.
both of you needs to clean your lens. how? just buy cd lens cleaner there is a liquid type by dropping 3drops to the brush of your cd cleaner then play this. ther is also the dry type you just play this and wait a few minutes until a notice appears that cleaning procedure is already completed
does it still read the disk you was playing or not if it dont then you could buy a lense cleaner put this into you ps2 and then after it has cleaned the lense try your games again you can buy these really cheap and they are just a disk with little brushes onn that cleans the lense in anything that takes disks if this dont solve the problem and the ps2 dont play any disk at all then the laser will need replacing you can replace it yourself but it will need to be recalibrated witch is something a pro must do as not doing this will stop it reading any disk but you only get this prob if you buy new laser you can get second hand ones but you never no if they are working or not hope this is some help to you
