Possible reasons:

1. bad RAM, will prevent windows from running or installing properly.
2. scratches on cd or dvd media
3. bad dvd or cd reader laser. will make cd or dvd media to overheat causing bad data reading
4. not enough space in hard disk or un-meet windows requirements.

We have a TEAC FD-05PUB external floppy drive that we are unable to run - system is Windows xp - we can connect to other PCs and it works fine. Thought perhaps it was the drivers but unable to located any...

The USB Floppy Drive shouldn't require drivers under Windows XP (according to TEAC, here: http://goo.gl/BvTcV).
Make sure your Windows XP installation is completely up to date, as Windows Updates often contain driver updates as well as system updates. If this still doesn't work (or your system is already completely updated), there are some additional troubleshooting options here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283658.

Unable to find fsx in windows registery unable to complete flight deck5 setup

Have you searched the registry using CTRL + F and typing in FSX or Microsoft? This should find all entries. If not, then FSX is not installed properly and you need to uninstall FSX, reboot and re-install. Good luck with it.
