After a few moments of sewing the thread escapes the needle. If I hold the end of the thread it pulls from the spool. Otherwise it just pulls from the excess thread and unthreads itself.

Dear Rosemarie,
Make sure you have threaded the machine from right to left, it sounds
like the needle thread is trapped under the lower looper thread and
cannot form a stitch.........start the threading over from scratch like
this:
Is there a diagram for how to thread on the inside of the door ?
Follow that slowly and carefully to make sure you have not missed any
thread guides on the way, as each one needs to be followed through to
ensure correct tension and thread progression.

im no expert, just been sewing for many years, i use 2 different juki machines, i suggest looking at the needle, are we sure you have the rite size? 135/ 140? did the needle just get changed? it could be the correct one, but if its in backwards, there isn't a dimple to let the hook behind the thread, to catch it, feel free to call me, 239-895-4845, my name is devin, shop is Quality Auto Trim Inc., ill try to help you over the phone if necessary, good luck

I do understand sometimes the manuals do not give a complete picture. Check out these videos that I have posted bellow. They show how to set it up.

Could you explain the problem a bit more. Sounds like a tension problem but it could also be a poor needle/thread match.
