emailed Sony support and they said take it to a repair center. Am still

Not quite sure what your problem is, if you mean you cant playback certain video formats ( avi/divx) you need the correct CODECS, you can download a player like VLC, it has everything built in, just download, install and play your movies
There should be a DVD/VCR button on the remote control which will toggle the machine from one playback source to another. If she has pressed the VCR button then the machine will only playback tapes & not show DVD's. Press this button & the DVD's should play. If you look closely at the front window of the machine it will show what mode it is in ie VCR or DVD, set this for the DVD to get it to play.
the best format to buy is the DVD-R but make sure your disc has been finalised if you reinsert your disc on the functions screen you should see finalise this is essential for compatible playback hope this helps regards Jim
USB1.1 port can generally handle transfer speeds approaching 5.5Mbps between PC and DVD Camcorder.
Smooth playback of movies requires 5.5Mbps speeds or above. If the PC you are using has some compatibility issues
with the USB driver software, the USB port may drop to speeds below 5.5Mbps causing short pauses during video
It is recommended to copy the movie file from the DVD Camcorder to the hard disc drive (HDD) on your PC, then playback the movie from the hard drive.
