Question about Microwave Ovens
I have a GE JES1358WL - a little more than a year old. It suddenly stopped working.
When I start it, it sounds just fine but does not heat at all. I am a novice with microwaves. Any help is appreciated.
I had a very similar situation with my microwave where it seemed like it was operating (light turns on, turn table turned, exhaust fan ran) but would not heat food. Everything else sounded normal (no electrical zaps or pops). If i tugged VERY gently on the door I could hear the magnetron kick on (deep hum). If I left the door alone teh magnetron would kick off. One of three door switches was acting up and prevented the magnetron from generating microwaves. Depending on the design of your microwave one (or more) door switch(es) will prevent the the magnetron from being energized and the other door switches operate the light, fans etc. I replaced one door switch and the everything worked great again.

More than likely your H.V. Diode took out your Magnetron or vise virsa. Check your users manual about the warranty because after 1-1-06 the warranty on most appliances went to a straight 1 year parts and labor.

Since this is just over a year old, you'll still have a part warranty on the magnetron, at least, in case it went bad.
Plus you can save about $50-75 if you remove it from the wall and take it to a GE-authorized servicer, You can find one by calling GE Appliance Service 1-800-848-7620.
Removing it from the wall is ideally a 2-person job and you should have your installation instructions handy. If not, you should be able to find it here: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/
That being said, generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:
- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
