Okay, so I bought a PS2 off Amazon, it's a PS2 fat version. When I set it up and put it on, it goes to the browser and config and won't let me click the X button or the TRIANGLE button, it wont lemme do anything. BUT when I I switch the ps2 OFF and put a game in it (speed freaks) it LOADS but won't actually let me play it, it's like my controller doesn't work? any suggestions?
PS2 has a special laser that reads DVD or CD media differently. It can be "bad" in a way that some work and others don't. Cost of laser replacement is too high, buy a cheap core unit and game on.

Hi i need more info when you put the game in and close draw does it load the game or does it just goto browser like their is no game in if this is the case then the only thing you can try is buying a lense cleaner and run this through your ps2 if this dont solve your problem then the chances are you will need the laser replacing you can get these off well known auction site but the problem is you will need the info on how to calibrate the new laser.

First you need to define what it IS and IS NOT reading. You'll need to run some tests.
Test 1: use a regular music CD (NON BURNED) (RETAIL) disk and put that into your ps2 and see if it starts playing it.
Test 2: insert a regular DVD (NON BURNED) (RETAIL) disk and try to play that.
If neither will play then it is one of two things. Your laser lens is out of alignment, or your laser lens is damaged.
If one plays but not the other, it is the potentiometer pots on the back of the PS2 lens that need adjusting. You can read more about that on one of my other posts ::.HERE.::

9 out of 10 times when the fat ps2 cant/wont read disk its the cd tray needs to be adjusted.
I would suggest opening up the ps2 and cleaning the console with Qtips and rubing alcohol. if the laser will wont read. go to youtube.com type in fix my ps2 laser. you will watch a video on how to adjust your cd tray.
The reason for this issue is if the laser is to close or to far from the cd the laser cant read the cd.
the worse problem u can come across is the laser 100% failed. which is rare but you can buy a new/used working laser on ebay.com or google it. the laser will have the model on it you want to make sure you get the correct model. otherwise it wont work.

HI, the optical lens assembly has failed in your unit. you will need to replace this failed assembly in order to restore the reading capabilities of this gaming console.

sounds like they damaged the lazer unit.....You could take it back if its not very old. so yea buy a new one

thanks guys, this is driving me bananas. I will try a music cd, and a film cd and I will get back to you. Paul doctor, when i swicth it off and THEN put in a game it loads to th game but wont let me do anything with my controller. so it READS the disc but wont let me play it. when i put a game in while the console is ON it wont load at all, stil stuck on he browser config screen
hey so LISTEN UP! it plays movies/slash tv shows, cause i just put in my friends dvd from the boxset it playsfine. BUT when i press the rectangle button to have options like pause, play, subtitles,skip etc, i can't select anything on that, its like my controller decides "i wont wanna cooperate right now"... and then when i took the film OUT it went BACK tothe browser config screen -____-! so if it reads my dvd then it cant be the laser can it????
