I have an Optio Z10 which has always worked fine. I then bought the S10 (yes, I love these Pentaxes) but after taking a few pictures with it, now, when I hit hit power, barrel extends, and I get a black screen, as though the lens cap hadn't opened, except it did. Everything is ok for onscreen messages and controls and display mode. Just that there's no through the lens image.

The LCD can be turned off simply by pressing the display button when in picture taking mode. It has 5 different states, one of which is completely black. Try cycling the display button.

I had this on mine, and after searching on the internet concluded it was a problem with the lens assembly. Taking the view that I could not lose, I disassembled the camera, which is probably not advisable. The problem I think was fixed, by gently tapping the front of the camera on the silver lens surround with the handle of the knife I used to undo the screws. I did this on repeated switch on, and after a fair number of times, the lens moved and the camera came back to life.... Re assembly was a bit tedious, but I was left with no screws or extra parts!!. One working camera and one happy son who has been using it for skate board video ing.

tuen on camera then press display a few times. it sounds like the display is just turned off. the lens system should be open.

Hello,
Is this a Canon ? If it is, you need to call Canon. You might have a CCD sensor failure.
Take a look at http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-digital-cameras-showing-black.html
If it is not a canon (You do not mention the brand) you are still best to contact the vendor. CCD failures can happen accross the board.
If the lens is a removable SLR type, take of the lens and take a photo. Does the mirror flip up at all and expose the CCD ?
Thanks
