Nltdr missing

How To: Fix "NTLDR is missing"

Applies to: Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP

Symptoms

When you start your computer, you receive the error message "NTLDR is missing. Press any key to restart."

Cause

The error message "NTLDR is missing" means that the Windows boot loader (NT Loader, NTLDR) cannot be found. This oftenoccurs when the computer tries to boot from a drive other than the one Windows is installed on, due to a change in the driveconfiguration or because you left a bootable disk in a removable drive. But it may also be because the NTLDR file has beencorrupted or deleted.

SolutionCheck the boot drives

First, check the boot drives to make sure that the computer is not trying to boot from a different drive to the one thatcontains Windows.

  • Check that there are no CDs or DVDs in the CD/DVD drives.
  • Check that no removable drives are plugged in to the USB ports.
  • Check the boot order in the BIOS Setup to ensure that the computer boots from the drive containing Windows before any other bootable devices.

If this does not resolve the problem, you will have to repair the NT boot loader.

Fix NTLDR

The easiest way to fix the "NTLDR is missing" error is to use Spotmau PowerSuite. However, if your computer is using Windows XP and you have a Windows XP installation CD you may be able to boot from this anduse the Recovery Console to fix NTLDR manually instead.

Use Spotmau PowerSuiteInsert the Spotmau PowerSuite CD and start the computer. The main menu will appear.spotmau-2.gif
  • Click 2. Windows Recovery.

  • When the Windows Recovery tool starts, click Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.

  • On the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 Recovery dialog, click Recover NTLDR and NTDETECT.

  • On the Recover NTLDR and NTDETECT dialog, select your operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and then click Recover.

The tool will repair the file and report "NTLDR and NTDETECT have been recovered successfully."

  • Remove the Spotmau PowerTools CD from the drive and click Restart to reboot the computer.

MY LAPTOP NOT START.. SAID , SBMK BAD! OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND.. WOULD YOU TELL ME HOW TO FIX IT?

the infamous "SMBK Bad!" message. Yes, that's from Smart Boot Manager.
Apparently, it was installed on the master boot record of your hard drive,
and the menu is SMB asking which boot loader you wish to load.

Linux usually boots from either grub or lilo ... you most likely have one
of these already in your linux install. Either can put up a boot menu
that allows you to boot a selected o/s. For sure, the list includes
linux, ME, DOS ... and probably XP as well. So one option is to install
grub or lilo in the mbr and use it. The other option is to put XP's
boot thingy back in the mbr and have it provide the boot menu. I don't
do windows, but I'm sure there are others here who can help with this
option. Option 3: download SBM and re-install it on the hard drive to
restore things as they were before you broke the SMBK.

Why the massage "bootmgr missing" while starting my computer? Is it the BIOS or HD problem? My BIOS Version is 1.0E-3181-8A20/37980800

Boot Manager

A boot loader, also called a boot manager, is a small program that places the operating system (OS) of a computer into memory. When a computer is powered-up or restarted, the basic input/output system (BIOS) performs some initial tests, and then transfers control to the Master Boot Record (MBR) where the boot loader resides. Most new computers are shipped with boot loaders for some version of Microsoft Windows or the Mac OS. If a computer is to be used with Linux, a special boot loader must be installed. It also allows multiple operating systems to be booted from the same computer.

This file contains the information where the system file is located.

The message you are encountering could be due to corrupt MBR or Corrupt hard drive.

Usually CHKDSK command fix this problem but as you can boot the system you will bot be able to run the command.

Download "Hiren's Boot CD" using the link below

http://hirens.longcomputerservices.com/Hirens.BootCD.10.1.zip

extract the downloaded file with winzip or winrar and burn it in a CD.

now boot the system using that CD (set your BIOS to boot from CD-DVD ROM).

you will have access to repair tools for Hard drive, MBR fix etc etc.i recommend you fgo for CHKDSK command

it will solve your problem.

Problems booting up. it cycles for up to 30 mins

Dear cobbsl00,

Whenever a system takes up to 30 minutes to boot, you may have a problem with the boot loader files, the Master Boot Record or the NT load files. If you are able to boot, immediately try to salvage any important data before it gets lost for good. Then try reloading your OS from scratch,

Good luck!

Reboot

Hi satiewe, no not you're CD. You'll need to enter the notebook's bios. How to get into the bios? Right after you press the power on button, start pressing the delete key every two seconds. The bios main menu should load. If pressing the delete key fail to load the bios menu, try again & press the F2 key every two seconds. The main menu will look like this:
1583ec1.jpg Look at the bottom of the menu & there are instructions on how to move about while in the bios. Go to the title, Advanced.
Listed to the right of; [PATA Primary Master : xxxxx] Where xxxxx is the model number of the hard drive, (Ex: ST80325B). Write this number/letter down. Than go to Boot .
Under boot is, Boot Device Priority. The normal order should be;
1st boot device, [floppy]
2nd boot device, [CD-ROM] - model name.
3rd boot device, [Hard disk drive]? The name of the drive was listed at the main menu as, Pata Primary Master (What you wrote down is what must show here). Than save the bios change & exit. The system will restart. If you placed the correct drive in the correct order you're system will start up.

Good Luck!
Mike
