I need help with this recovery file
I had the same problem and manage to solve it. You need to do the following
a. go to Archos website and download latest firmware and save on your pc
b. turn on 504 and select repair - unit not connected to pc
c. connect 504 to pc and wait until pc recognise it
d. copy firmware from pc and past to 504 root directory.
e. press done on 504. that should work. I've spent the best part of 10 hours looking for a solution to the dreaded recovery code 4. The problem is a corrupt os. I hope you're as lucky as me.
I still have a problem with mine though...a screen that blink constantly.
Connect your archos by USB then...
Download and save the most up-to-date Archos operating system (firmware) to your desktop - it's of the file type *.aos file (in this case for the 404, "a404.aos")
Switch on the Archos so you get the warning message and the 3 messages, "no", "repair" & "format".
Select repair or format (format removes all data however, works best) - this recognises your Archos on your PC - do not select "Done".
Open my computer or home & you will see your archos drive in hard drive mode.
You can now drag & drop the a404.aos file from your desktop into your Archos (root).
Once you can see the aos file on your Archos (do not select done on on your Archos) reboot your pc keeping the USB cable plugged in and your archos will automaticelly update then reboot.
Switch the archos off (if frozen use a pin to reset it) then on & it should function again!!!

Many thanks
col
It does not even have anything on the screen!..
Thanks for the help i have done it
You need to hold down both the power button and the one next to it to power up is maintainance mode. In this state it should communicate with a host PC via USB. Just give the PC long enough to react to the new device.
The arcos screen should show the three choices : recover system , don't recover , format disk.
The latter will blast everything so dont do that unless you're sure you don't want anything at all you have on the archos.
recover system will ask for an update file. This is what you need to supply by adding it to the archos from the PC.
This can be done from Linux if you wish.

Thanks for your advice my Archos decided to die on me , not as bad as a ipod :) thanks for your tips did the job nicely
How did you get your pc to recognise it?
mine will not because it is not switched on?
This is a recovery mode, and this menu allows you to:
-Format your hard drive
-Restore your system
In case of repair disk is selected :
For the first step you have to go on our website, and download the latest firmware update for your product.
Plug your Archos 504/604 on the computer and copy the firmware previously downloaded at the root of your device.
Disconnect your device as usual, and select done on the screen.
You have to plug the dc adaptor to update successfully, press a button to reboot your device.here is the web address http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/updates.html?country=us&lang=en&#firm6,680 views
