Eltax DVR-555HD After playing or recording a DVD, the DVD draw refuses to open. The machine either tries to re-load or freezes. After several attempts, the draw will open. Sometimes have to switch the machine off. It seems to get quite hot. I have tried the Eltax website but cannot get any service and do not know who in the UK can service it.

Hello either its loading motor is faulty, or the loading belt is broken. The commands are reciving, but it does not work mechanically. A mechanical fault indeed.
My machine has also done this since it was new. I was just about to bring it in for repair when I thought I would try one more thing. I turned on the recorder. I put in the movie that would not play and let it load (of course it would not load). I pushed the on/off button on the recorder and held it down until the "wait" message came up on the display. After the message disappeared I turned the recorder back on. To my surprise the movie loaded and played. I tried all the other movies I had trouble with and they also played. I hope this helps. I saved my self over 200 dollars in repair bills. I was quite surprised at the lack of help from toshiba.
Resetting the Recorder to Factory Settings
1. Make sure that the recorder is on
2. Press and hold the STOP button and STANDBY/ON button.
The recorder turns off with all settings reset.
The disc won't spin until the unit recognizes that there is actually a disc there. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails, try playing a CD. If the CD plays, the optics are starting to fail as reading a DVD requires higher laser power.

Your unit may be fubar. OR, it is possible that your unit is not compatible with the media you are using - try different brand to draw conclusions and be guided accordingly.
Try unplugging the unit from its power supply. Wait a few moments and then plug it back in. I have the same unit and that is what I have had to do. I am afraid that we have purchased junk. This machine "works" some of the time. It usually functions well as a player but fails on numerous occasions as a recorder.
My recorder has stopped accepting NEW DVD-RW discs and ejects them. There is no problem loading DVD-R (new or recorded)or loading previous recorded DVD-RW, initializing and re-recording I have tried several different DVD-RW makes. Puzzling??
