Drill a hole in a piece of plywood that fits over the lighter. Have someone press the plywood onto the plastic. Put a cord with slip knot over the lighter stem and add a wooden T-Handle to the other end of the cord, you pull and the other person presses.
Just noticed this is an old question that has had spam removed which resurrected it.
You need to plug it into to the cigarette lighter or your pc. I take mine in the house and connect it to the pc to charge, but it will charge with the cigarett lighter too.
You need to check the fuse for both the car's cigar lighter AND the one in the GPS power plug (that goes into the cigar lighter outlet). Both must be good for the GPS to charge and power up.
I don't know if your friends cord worked in you car - or hers - so you're going to have to find out if it is the cord fuse or the car fuse. Since her cord worked on your GPS, start by using HER CORD connected to YOUR GPS in both cars. If it works in her car, but not in yours, check & replace your car's cigar lighter fuse. If or when it works in both cars, disconnect her cable and connect your cable to your GPS again. Connect into your cigar lighter. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't work, disassemble the plug at the end of the GPS cord (cigar lighter end) and check and replace the fuse if blown. You should be good to go at this point.

Does the unit turn on when you plug it into the lighter socket? If not, does the lighter socket power other 12 volt devices? IF the lighter socket works and the radar detector doesn't there is a fuse in the plug end of the power cord. Unscrew the tip to expose the fuse. Replace it with a 2 amp fuse from any auto parts store and try it again.
I live in Brunswick Ga, can you tell me where to find a replacement ac charging plug and the cigarette lighter plug for my Vector Jump Start 450 amps,(VEC012c).Thank You Mr. Prior
Just check to see if there is any rust or debris in there. If there is rust in there just use a little sand paper. if not use a rag or paper towel to clean it up. When you plug your phone charger into it you should not have a problem getting it out because the charger end has a spring loaded clip that only holds it in lightly so that it makes contact to ground. I hope this helps. Don't forget to rate my answer, thanks.
YOU CAN PURCHACE A NEW 12V OUTLET AT ANY PARTS STORE. THEY ARE EASY TO INSTALL TOO. YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE DASH TRIM. TWIST THE HOUSING OF THE OLD ON TO THE LEFT AND IT WILL UNSCREW. REPLACE WITH A NEW ONE THE SAME WAY. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WIRES THAT WILL PLUG RIGHT IN.
Hello kdiltzbook, Most GPS units can be charged three different ways: 1. Connection to a computer via USB port 2. Connection to a automobile via cigarette lighter plug 3. Connection to a wall outlet via an AC adapter Typically most GPS devices these days include only the USB cord. Some GPS units also include the cigarette lighter plug. For most GPS units the cigarette lighter plug and AC adapter are optional accessories have to be purchased in addition to the GPS. You don't mention which model of Magellan GPS you have so I am not sure which cords your GPS should have included. It sounds like you have the cigarette lighter cord and the USB cord? I am sure that Magellan has an AC adapter available for your GPS. You will want to contact them directly (their website is http://www.magellangps.com) or visit an electronics store that sells Magellan GPS receivers (such as Best Buy™) to purchase the adapter. However, most GPS receivers can be charged from the USB programming cord on the computer. However, ensure you are plugging the cord directly into a USB 2.0 on the computer itself NOT a port on a USB hub.(A USB hub may not output enough power to actually power and charge the GPS.) You will also want to check and replace the fuse on the automobile plug. I believe that both the USB and automobile cords should be charging the GPS. If neither adapter is charging the unit then the problem may be the GPS unit itself. The GPS may have a bad battery or problem with its charge circuitry. If that’s the case the unit may require factory service as the battery pack is generally not considered to be end user replaceable.
Any cigarette lighter 12 volt power adapter will work, as long as it fits. Take your unit to Best Buy, Fry's, Walmart, or Circuit City and match the plug that goes into the unit to a new one. The other end will plug into the car lighter socket. Check the gps section of the electronics department. They will have one that works.
