It would be better to use a clay style rubbing compound .the red or brown color first, then go over with the white rubbing compound to bring up the shine, then wax, hope it helps, Gary

would be the clear coat peeling you are seeing
should not need a full roof respray unless very bad

best option
get a quote from a car spray painter re-gel coat the roof
takes a fine sanding the roof area that is peeling
and a few coats of clear cote gel
and buff to a great finish

How to spot paint repair your car, etc!

Easy job for anyone in 9 simple steps!
1st) You will want to have a few simple tools.(Sanding paper, Auto Paint, Clear Gloss, A paint gun or airbrush, primer, masking tape and/or masking paper, car wax.)

**** [Note: the directions for each of these tools and/or products are clearly marked when you buy them & ech one's uses is different, so please follow directions for each!]

2nd) You will separate that spot from the rest of your car by masking off that area.

3rd) You will sand that area down to the metal.

4th) You will take your sand paper (Medium grit) and scuff up the area.

5th) You will clean all dust from that area by blowing it off and/or washing it off (Simple soap and water will do), then dry it completely.

6th) You will spray primer the area to be fixed. (one or 2 coats will do.) then let it dry.

7th) You will scuff the area up with sandpaper again (medium grit) then lay your basecoat paint down on it (3 to 4 coats) and let it dry between each coat.
8th) You will scuff the area up again with the medium grit sandpaper and you will spray clear gloss over it (3 to 4 coats) and let it dry.

9th) You will wash clean againthe area and buff to more of a showroom glow!!!

Now you are done!
You can apply these basic methods to most any paint jobs, for they are the basic way an pro auto painter does a good paint job....
Thank you for your time!
Have fun!

My motorcycle windshield needs to be restored. How do I get it clear as new again without having to by a new one?

The best way is to machine polish it with g3 cutting compound, it will be better than new another way is to use a hot air gun but be careful because to much heat will ruin it

How to bring back the color....what to put on it????

In this article you will learn the best way to spray paint anything from wood frames auto parts.
Difficulty: Moderate Instructions things you'll need:

  • primer
  • spray paint
  • microfiber towl
  • 300 grit sandpaper
  • 800, 1000,1200,1500 grit wetsand paper
  • 2000 grit wetsand paper
  • clearcoat
  • rubbing compound
  • medium cut polish
  • wax
    • 1

Start by removing the part that needs to be painted. (You can also tape around it, but be careful about overs pray)

    • 2

Sand the part with the 300 grit sand paper until the surface is a little rough. This is necessary for the primer to bond with the surface. After sanding wipe down the part with micro fiber cloth.

    • 3

Lightly spray the part with primer. A few light coats are better than one heavy coat. Make sure to allow proper drying time between coats.

    • 4

After a few light coats of primer have been applied, wetsand with the 800 grit sandpaper. After wet sanding, wipe again with micro fiber cloth.

    • 5

Now it is time to apply the color. When spraying the spray paint make sure to use smooth even passes across what is being painted. Do not start painting on top of the part because the paint will be heavier in that area. When painting you want to press and release the button to the side of the product being painted. Again a few light coats are better than one heavy one and make sure to allow proper drying time between coats.

    • 6

After you are satisfied with the color, wetsand with 800 grit sandpaper and then wipe with micro fiber cloth.

    • 7

Now it is time for the clear coat. Spray the clear coat the same way as the spray paint. Only one or two light coats are needed. Allow the clear coat plenty of time to dry as this is the layer that you will see most. You don't want any fingerprints on your final surface!

    • 8

After the clear coat has had more than enough time to dry, You now want to wetsand with the 800 grit, then the 1000 grit, then 1200, then 1500, and finally the 2000 grit sandpaper. This should remove any heavier spots in the clear coat and will polish your painted product up very nicely.

    • 9

Next you need to remove the scratches left by the 2000 grit. For this you will need to buff the surface with rubbing compound.

    • 10

Now you need to buff the surface with a medium cut polish to give the surface a nice glassy look.

    • 11

Whether it be exterior or interior parts that have been painted, I always add a couple coats of wax to the surface. This acts as a protectant to the clearcoat and gives it a nice smooth feel and also helps repel dirt.

Clearcoat

sanding really dont matter .. I usually sand only one direction and watch what your doing to the surface of the clear coat .. you can actually watch the orange peel disappear..use a damp rag once in a while to wipe the area your sanding so you can see your surface to make sure your getting it perfect .. this is the way to get a super job. if you use a rag to wipe the surface this also helps you see if your getting enough off or not .. use 2000 grit when doing this it makes it easier to buff off when your all done.. then go to your polishing compound not rubbing compound . hope this helps and good luck .. I love clear coating its really nice if you take your time sanding it and getting the surface perfect and with no imperfections... holler if you need more.. Jerry

Gas tank decal

Okay, I did this with my original tank. Your decals were most likely clear coated over after they were applied (at least mine were). To remove mine I wet-sanded carefully around the perimeter of the decal (to break the clear coat). Then carefully warm them with a hairdryer and peel away (long arduous process). They will likely leave a gummy residue that will need to be removed with something like “Goo Gone” or light solvent. Then some more wet-sanding to feather the edges. You’ll need to re-clear coat the spot and buff everything so it blends together.

Paint is blistering on edge of hood. Can it just be re painted, or is hood replacement. This is a 2004 Ford Explorer.

First Wash the area, than take a dremel and with the wire wheel @ high speed, grind off the bistering and feather as best into good paint. Next rough up the area with some 100 grit sand paper. Use body filler (bondo 2 part filler) and smooth over with plastic blade. When dried work with 220 grit sand paper till you achieve the lines you want. spray cover with primer and apply touch up paint(Dealer has the best matchs) in coats. When happy with color use a 400 grit wet sandpaper to get a highly smooth finish and when dried cover with a clear coat finish.(Auto part stores). Buff when that dries and I guarantee thats the cheapest easiest d-i-y- fix you can get.
