Only 1 yr old gets spark I have to take air cover off to get going then it runs at half choke stalls when I go to full run.
Make sure your fuel mix is fresh and of the right gas-oil ratio. Today's pump gas has Ethanol mixed with the gas and can go bad in as little as 30 days. this stuff is terrible to run in small 2 cycle engines. A lot of loggers I know buy Ethanol free gas for their saws. Also do not ever use starting fluid to start a 2 cycle engine ! What happens is the Either washes the cylinder wall of oil and now you have a scored piston and/or cylinder

You need to disassemble the carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. If you need tips on how to do this, just let me know. You may need a new carb. kit as well, but we won't know that until you first perform the first step, or if the carb. parts are more than 3 years old. If they are, then go ahead and buy the carb. kit and replace the parts.

I had the same problem. I took it to the dumpster and used my old echo that I purchased in 1986. The Homelite was 2 years old. My sugesstion is to dump it.

I would suggest cleaning the carb (remove it) and air filter. There are a few really small passages in the carb that need to be cleaned which get gummed up due to the 2 stroke mixture and sitting for the winter. (Even if you drained the fuel)
DO NOT use a piece of wire or anything to clean out any small passages. Use carb cleaner and compressed air, put it back on, and see if it's better.
If that doesn't do it, a carb rebuild is in order. Not very many parts on those little buggers. If the cleaning doesn't solve it, it's most likely a bad diaphram from sitting and drying out. (Which I'm learning towards due to the lack of pressure when you prime and having it starve for fuel and die after a minute of running). There is a square plate on the bottom of the carb held on by 3 or 4 screws. That's the cover for the diaphram. Remove the screws and plate and look at the diaphram to see if it has a hairline crack, if it's sticking (there's a spring under it), or if any thing else looks out of whack.
