Question about Samsung PCH521R 52" Rear Projection Television

Samsung SPT-521J Losing Color

Just found this site and thought it looked promising.
I have just purchased an older Model Samsung SPT-521J Rear Projection TV.  The Unit works well but the color does not.  LOL!
The unit starts up in Black and White and after about an hour or so the color comes on all at once.
My thoughts are that it's just a cold solder joint and that when the unit heats up, things expand... etc.  This is further backed up by the fact that the previous owner has indicated that a well placed "Tap" will sometimes start the color as well.
While I was an Electronic Engineering Technologist in a previous life, I have never worked on TV's and have no idea what board to start with.  While I'm waiting for an answer, I'm going to go at the unit with heat and cold and see if I can find the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you... But I don't think so... and here is why:

I took off the back and like you say, two vertically mounted boards and two laying flat on the bottom.  With the TV on, I lifted ever so slightly on the left, flat mounted board, and color comes in perfectly.  Among other writing on this board, is - AV Switching.

Because of this, I'm pretty sure my problem is here.  I've removed the board and been looking at it for about an hour now but can't see a bad solder joint.  I'm off to find a Magnifying glass.  Any direction as to the problem component on this board would be of assistance though.

There is a large shielded module mounted vertically on the signal board (leftside when looking from rear) You need to resolder all the connections. This is a very common issue............Good Luck

I have a samsung Spt-521J 52 inch rear projection tv, and the image on it is curved at the top like the colours are out of whack i also see red a green thin lines at the top of the screen. Any suggestions...

it sounds like a convergence circuit failure most likley a couple of ics and always the possability of a couple resistors being out of tolerance and there are also pico fuses on source voltages to the ics
if you have the tool and and can solder its a doable task if not you may want to call a local and get a est for convergence circuit repair
to repair it will require the components to be replaced to correct the problem

We have a HCM4215W 42' projection TV that we purchased in 2003. Our picture has color shadows. Perfect focus doesn't work and neither does manual convergence. This happened in 2006 when it was under...

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem. If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured. You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as

We have a 50inch ultra-vision, the picture seems to be dim and losing its color

If the set has not been serviced in several years and the picture slowly got darker and or duller looking you may just need to try something simple.

With the set unplugged and the back cover removed look for the three lens----I presume it is a older set called rear projection and not a DLP, the model number would tell me which it is.

If older you will find three large black lens near the middle, clean them free of dust etc with a lens cloth and check the picture again.

Let me know model number if you need further help

It sounds like a fan blade is hitting or rubbing on something @ the picture is a little off color wise

If you hear like whirling sound and vibration on the TV,it looks like the color wheel bearing is loosing balance and is hitting the housing unit, the color wheel spins @ 5000 rpm you will definitely notice when is going off i have this link that i found i hope it helps it's not your TV model but at least you will have and idea of what you need to look for.

good luck

The color on the screen comes and goes. sometimes it will work fine for a long time then it may come on and off. Samsung SPT-521J

Re soldering all the Circuit board that already cracked by the heat should fix the problem.
To make sure of it, only re soldering on the RGB Board.

How do I access the color wheel on my Samsung HLP4663W?

Looking from the rear of the set, the color wheel is just to the left of the lamp, underneat an aluminum heat sink. You have to remove 7 screws to get to it.
