Browse to the location on the new computer where you want to save the old data.
Right click and choose New Folder.
Name the folder Files from Old PC
Press enter twice and the new folder will open.
Plug the Maxtor USB into the new computer and turn on the power.
The drive will install and be given a drive letter in my computer.
Browse to the drive in My Computer and double click the Maxtor drive.
Browse to the folder where you saved the old data and open it.
Now do the keyboard command CTRL + A (select all) this will select all the files.
Click one of the selected files & drag them all to the new folder you have open and let go.
All of the files from the Maxtor will copy to your new computer.

I have an old (1995) maxtor disk model 71626AP out of my old computer. I think I want to install it as a slave in my windows/XP desktop computer. Other than removing the jumper at J20, is there anything...

Windows will recognize it. Just be sure the other drive is jumpered as master/primary and the old drive is jumpered as slave/secondary and that they connect to the same IDE cable.

Maxtor 80 gb portable hard drive copying problem

Unless the data on the maxtor is very important You should format the drive, assuming you are using windows, go to my computer, right click on the drive, it should show the option to format. If the info is very important, my advice take it to a info recovery business.

You cannot download drivers/software for the Maxtor Mini at the above URL. When you select the Maxtor Mini, you're redirected to a contact form you have to fill out just to get the software. Pretty lame on Seagate's part! I'll think twice before purchasing anything else from them.

Old Maxtor/New Maxtor

If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer.

And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.
