I'm no genius, but your problem sounds like you can go to the menu icon with the two horizontal arrows and adjust it. Like i said, I'm not a genius, so it might not be your problem.
I have found that too many programs are trying to write to disk for defrag to work very well, however if you boot your pc into "Safe mode" you should be able to defrag without those programs being active
