We can't begin to help you without know what machine you have. If the E4 message indicates to clean the machine, then apparently something was missed. Perhaps debris in the feed dogs, broken thread stuck somewhere...
Usually the error codes are shown as like E4 which would be
E4: You hit the reverse button while the bobbin winder shaft was moved over to the right. Move the bobbin winder shaft to the left. If you have any further questions or feel that the error is an F error code instead of an E error code message me back and I will look futher into your F error code but even if you click this link which will bring you to the brother error message site click here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us/en/faq/faqh/000000/000000/000064/faqh000064_000.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hf_ce5000eus&Cat=56 it still basicly says the same thing and the errors are shown as E's. I await your reply if you have any further questions Thanks Rick
Your reverse reinforcement stitch button was pushed or needle position was pushed while bobbin winder was moved to the right. You can download a free manual brother-usa.com and you will see all of the troubleshooting and error messages there
The E4, error message means the safety device is activated. Machine is locked up due to thread entangled with the bobbin case. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case. Check for any thread around the hook area. Also check your handwheel. It should turn freely. Good Luck
