Antenna light still on

I got a new radio yesterday. The SWR's were really high took it to a CB shop and they fixed her up. Set my antenna all was good till a few hours later. Now the darn red light is on when I key up. But the SWR's are low. Everyone say's they hear me fine and I can hear them but that darn red antenna light is still on.

i installed the same radio in my nissan hardbody with a palomar tx 75 linear to help it out some, but even with out the linear the red light still comes on. my swr setting is close to 1.5 and all the wiring is all straight and good. what could be my problem?

I have the same problem to. Cobra 29 chrome. Peaked, tuned and an echo board. Swr 1.5. If I leave the radio alone and the light comes on, will it hurt anything?

These 29LTD's have a very sensitive swr warning light circuit. When these radios are peaked, or have the power in them turned up, they have a tendency to fire the warning light even though the SWR is fine. Check your SWR with a good meter first, then, if all is fine, as suggested below, turn down the variable pot back behind the transformer that controls the light circuit. When driving an amplifier with a 29LTD, stray RF can also light up the 29LTD's antenna light, even though the SWR is fine. Check the SWR between the radio and the amp, and then, between the amp and the antenna. If both readings are below 1.5, you have nothing to worry about. Turn down the variable pot if the light bothers you. I had a modified 29LTD hooked up to a Texas Star 500, and when I spoke into the mike,(modulated), the light would flash on and off with my voice. I thought it was kinda cool. Of course, I knew my SWR readings were fine.

The antenna warning light on the Cobra 29 LTD has a pot ( varabile resistor ) that sets the senativity of the light coming on. If you open the radio, you'le see the pot at the back of the radio. It's the last pot in the rear of the chassis Simply turn it more torward the center of the setting ( anyplace is ok as it means nothing to the preformance of the radio ). The light won't come on unless the SWR's are high. Good Luck and if I can help more, you can email me at this address or at my email address [email protected].

As close to the antenna as you can, take 6 feet of extra coax and make a coil out of it about 6 to 8 wraps. Use electrical tape to hold the coil together.

It should be a uniform coil. One loop next to another.

I take a spray paint can and wrap the wire 8 times, then tape it around with electrical tape. Wrap the coil with tape. When you pull the can out the coil will stay in tact.

When you turn up the power, depending on the antenna and coax, you can get what is called common mode currents. This can sometimes trip this light. Basically stray RF travels down the outside of the cable, when normally it should stay on the inside. The coil is an RF choke. It will stop the RF from traveling down the outside of the coax. it has no effect on the signal on the inside.

This will also help keep you signal from bleeding over your car stereo and other RF problems.

You need somebody with a swr meter to calibrate the installion, if your antenna light is coming on the swr readings are to high and you risk blowing the rf transistor in the radio.

Get or have someone Set the SWR's on your antenna. That is the first thing you should always do before even talking on the radio.. Check the antenna.
You will need an SWR meter to check your antenna. FIRST.
I would find help at a local cb shop.. They SHOULDN"T CHARGE to help you SET the swr. only if you need a part or something ..
I don't charge to SET SWR"s .. only if the cust needs a insulating washer or another antenna, or new coax, so-239 etc... I would be glad to help you.. let me know if we can -- CB Shop Temple, TX

How to match a antenna to a cobra 29 LTD Classic

You are actually tuning the antenna to the vehicle it is mounted on here are some very good resources.

Be aware that if your radio has been modified it may produce a dirt signal that an swr meter may read as reflected power. In this case it may be more accurate set with a unmodified radio also if your radio is setup for a linear it may have a deadkey to low for the swr meter to calibrate correctly.
Hope this was of help.

How do i set up, calibrate my cb

Your wanting to calibrate your ANTENNA. put on ch1 change switch to SET, key mic adjust cal knob to edge of red in meter should have a lil arrow. then change switch to SWR it should show the SWR of the ANtenna system. You'll want SWR to be 1.5 or less under the 2 in the green. Do the same on ch 40 and compare readings. remeber ch 1 is a longer wavelength than ch 40..

so if its good on ch1 and high on ch 40 make it shorter
and vice versa, bad on 1 and good on 40 make longer
Then try to get them balanced ..... or have the cb shop in templetx do it they will normally do it for free except for parts to fix any problems.

Based on your post/description:

1. how do i set the swr
Normally SWR are calibrated on your operating channel (where you usually stand-by). This is to maximize transmit power and receive sensitivity. To set SWR, switch to channel of your choice, switch SWR control to CAL, key or press PTT, while pressing PTT rotate ADJ knob until max deflection of needle on meter, release mic, switch control to SWR, key/press PTT, needle reading/deflection is SWR for that channel.

I would suspect that your SWR will vary from your current 1.4. This is because you have too big excursion of channels (240 channels).

2.reading a 1.4
This reading is good enough and should do. However as earlier stated, you seem to have 240 channels which would mean that your radio + antenna moves in a wide bandwidth and since the antenna tuning is affected by frequency, your SWR will also be affected by channel.

Best if you can further lower it down.

3. some cb cant get me
This is because the standard CB radio is only 40 channels. The next would be a 80 channel and then 120 channels.

4. is it my radio
Yes, you have a wide coverage radio almost an extended 10 meter rig.

5. do i have to set my radio on high or low to set my swr
I will assume you are referring to power output, set it to HIGH when doing SWR calibration

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Red ant light

The red light always comes on while mic is keyed. It is designed to do that. It will blink on and off while mic is keyed if there is a SWR problem. This is explaned in operaters manual.

Matching Antenna, or ??????

If the antenna is tunable, you definitely need to start out by having the swr set properly on the antenna. Also, make sure the plastic ferrel, (the small round white piece) is between the top of the antenna bracked and the antenna itself. It is there to make sure the antenna does not ground out to the vehicle. If the antenna is grounding out, it will be like no antenna at all. I have also had a few customers that have had broken coaxes straight out of the factory package on cheaper antenna setups.
