Sony Playstation3 the console seems to be overheating after turn on causing the unit to freeze up the video, the fan is running but in low speed, the powersupply is very hot to the touch what would cause the unit to be running so hot? thanks in advance for help

    thanks, I will buy the ps3 intercool unit and try it.The unit was manufactored feb of 2007. have you had any more like this one, can it be anything else?

Seems to be the same issue as the Xbox 360 they have a cooling fan that attaches to the back of the system you can read about it here

    If you do a google search on ps3 overheating you will be suprised at everyone having your same problem. overheating is not good for the system if it keeps overheating its just a matter of time until more issue appear. (parts inside start to fry). PS3 is a computer in a small box. Just like my computer (servers at work) they are in a room with it's own cooling system that stays at 68 the cooler they are the better they work.

on the back of your controller there is a reset button have to use a pin to get in and reset it as far as the ps3 freezing its probley the fan going bad and causing the ps3 to overheat, does it just freeze up or shut down.

The first thing you should do is try manually resetting the video settings on your PS3. To do this, first be sure your unit is off and the red light is visible. Hold your finger down on the power button and you will hear 3 beeps before the unit will turn off. Once this is done, turn the unit back on and you should have video.

If the unit is blinking a red light, this is known as the Yellow Light of Death for the PS3. This is caused when the unit overheats, causing the solder on the board to melt and bridge (connect). Once this happens it shorts out the board, causing the error you have now. Contact Sony and see if the unit is still under warranty.

if you think the fan is not running it may not or on new models the fan is so quiet so put your hand on the back of the unit and see if you can feel air coming out of the unit if not then I have fan on sale or you can send your unit and we can tested and install a new fan or fix your freezing problem if the fan is ok

It is freezing because your playstation is to close to the tv and its getting to hot...it is due to overheating you are having this problem ... so try moving it to another spot....you must take care to keep it properly vented.......
The system is prone to overheating, particularly if you happened to have bought older stock.
One way to deal with this is to stand it vertical, and put a small desk fan behind it.Turn on the fan when you turn on the game. I know it's an annoyance but it is a very simple and effective way to work around the problem.
DO NOT use an intercooler fan or any cooling device that gets power from the playstation. It just makes it worse.

when thermal compound fails it gets overheated so you need to look into this too ...replacing the thermal compound on the heat syncs and it should only cost about $5.00 to fix your playstation.

Ps3 no display no sound
if the ps3 shuts down on its own it is due to overheating. It is necessary to disassemble the unit and apply AS5 compound and shim the heatsinks to ensure proper contact between the heat sink and the processors. I can do this for $55 or you can send to SONY if under warranty. If not under warranty they will fix for 150+tax call 1800345SONY

Playstation3 freezes up
this is similar to the red blinking lights on the xbox360...it seems your cell processor has overheated resulting in a cold solder joints or worse bridged solder involving the BGA array...I have had some success in fixing these albeit limited. SONY charges 150 plus state tax and sends you a refurbished unit. i can fix it for 55 shipped if interested

If the disc/laser lens are dirty it will cause the games to freeze, or if the system doesn't have proper ventilation it will overheat.
