Go to Gift Cards
Go to Add Gift Card
Enter your Card Information
It will show your cards balance
When you purchase an item, select Gift Card as payment method

I notice they automatically charge your 1-click account when it's due. Have you set up payment info?
Another way to have the money available, is to buy a gift card for your account. Then you can add money to it anytime. That way it doesn't affect your bank balance unless you fall below the needed amount. I haven't joined unlimited yet so the gift card lets me buy books when I see them and not worry about my bank account.

log onto amazon.com place cursor on Your Account to bring up list, click your account(top of list), under amazon wallet click add gift to acct. follow prompts to set up card. Then just add money as needed. Any charges will be taken from gift first and will go back to your current method of payment only when your charge is larger than balance.

No it does not cost money to have an account. It does however cost money to buy books to read, However some books you can get for free. You can get a free account from amazon.com.

If you have a tablet just download the Kindle app from the app store and it will walk you through setting up an account and everything.

go online to amazon.com Below the address bar you will see "Your Account" Place cursor over that and choose Your account at the top of list. I'd say for this click on Kindle help home(on right side) Next page click Contact us on the left. Fill in info and request phone call.

login in www.amazon.com and then in the right collapsible menu go to my devices and add your serial number and your kindle will be added in the account so you can restore all your previous epub. There is also the chance that you have used calibre and so you will have all your backed up copis in your documents in the pc.

Change your apple id that way the people who took the card can't use it they would need your apple id to do so
