Stop Substitles on a LG RHT497H 160G dvd recorder?

I have the LG DVD recorder DRT389H which has the same problem. You can't switch off the subtitles during timer recording from the Electronic Programme Guide. The only way I could stop this was to go to the main set-up menu then select the A icon. Select DTV Subtitle and choose a language that the TV programme isn't broadcast in. I chose Gaelic. The only disadvantage is that this stops any subtitles being recorded so you can't access them later.

When deleting a film previously recorded on my Sony DVD recorder the amount of available space shows 650k as opposed to 800k despite the fact that I have no other recordings held. Can you explain why this...

Jim, Although you have deleted the recording the DVD recorder still sees that space as have been being used. The space should be reusable however the area has been used before (therefore not considered unused space).  By deleting the recording you should have no problem going over the area when it is needed.  Happy Recording Rob

DVD player won't record full time that is programed into it

There are two things are likely that can cause this: media and copyright protection. If you use DVD-RW or DVD-RAM, you should be able to copy shows ONE time onto the DVD. If you use DVD+RW, or DVD+R, it may issue a copy protection message just before it stops recording.
If the media is bad, it can also cause the machine to stop recording, I believe. You could put it into a PC and try erasing the contents before re-trying to use it in the DVD recorder.

DVD disc recording

Certain disc only work in certain recorders - I know this sound weird but you must find the disc that is compatible with the recorder that you are using. If the TDK discs is working continue to use the TDK discs. Even though the format and the specifications are the same on both disc, the readers does not read all disc.

Won't format and or won't read disc

I have a similar problem in that it will not record at all or not record very well.  It has a drive inside like a PC DVD drive called the DVD RAM drive. The horrible clunking (grinding) sound is the disc slipping in the spindle. Unfortunately here in Australia the fix is to replace the whole drive (AU$350)!!
I have opened it up and tried to adjust the force of the spindle and it works for a while.
Hope somebody has a better solution.
