I have the same model. The only thing that work was simultaneously holding down the HOME and STOP buttons for about 5 seconds. The blinking yellow light stopped and I was able to scan.
Pressing STOP and OK simultaneously worked for me.
I ran into the same problem with the PIXMA MP610 and unfortunately the only "solution" I found was to replace the empty ink cartridge. Which I agree makes no sense since I wasn't trying to print anything...

I may need more information, but I have a printer/scanner and it will not allow me to scan if the catridges are not in the machine. Even if they are empty, I have to leave them in the printer in order to scan. I will still get the "low ink" warning, but it will allow me to scan documents. Yours is possibly the same. Sometimes you simply have to acknowledge "OK" so you can enter a different mode of the printer, so if you have not acknowledged to the machine that you understand the error message, this could be a reason you cannot scan. Try pressing the "OK", "enter" or the "yes" button, depending on what button configfuration your printer has.
