Freezes up I have a Ibm thinkPad T20 and it freezes up after 10 min or less

I have same problem, T20 laptop freezes at different times when running XP with normal SW like firefox/thunderbird,...

There is no entry in event viewer, which would help further.

I already checked RAM with memtest86, no issue found.

I also checked HDD with test-tools found in web. No issue found.

Can it be, that HDD is still broken, but test-tools won't find it?

Or do I need to check other area's?

HDD and RAM is fine, crosschecked in another T20.

Now I exchanged the thermal pad between cpu and fan against thermal paste. But it didn't solve it.

It looks, that the fan stops working once xp boots. During BIOS checks the fan is on, but than it goes off. Other users reported similar finding, but I couldn't observe a real solution. I have latest BIOS installed already.

My thinkpad works fine but one day I blocked the side air vents and heated couldn't escape. It finally crashed and did a self shutdown. I had a wait a few minutes but then it was okay again. Does yours lockup/shutdown after exactly 10 minutes or is it intermittant. Also what happens if you are in the bios and you are doing something for over 10 minutes does it still cutout or does it continue working correctly. It might be a software problem if the bios works okay. Also if there is a battery fault. May be the charger can charge the battery but cannot power the computer so when it switches from an exausted battery to main power it shuts down.

This error can be caused by one or more of the below possibilities:

Power suply
Cooler dont work propertly
Or you are infected with virus
But most of those problem happent when HDD is damanged!

IBM Thinkpad 2681 5UU freezes intermittently

When a system freezes it is typically the memory or video failing. It could also be overheating too. Try opening the unit and blowing out all the dust. Ensure the in and out air ports are clear too. If this does not help them you may have to have it services by a professional.

My IBM Thinkpad T22's battery doesnt last. can i fix that?

Basically you need a new battery. Recharageable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and they lose their full charge capacity as the get older. The batteries will have less capacity over time ie less available battery time, and when it is worn out, it won't charge at all.

Sounds like a virus. See is you can start it in safe mode. If you can, do a virus scan.

Laptop freezes up

Yes you can get a 512mb chip for this. As for the freezing, it could be a number of issues, anything from a software glitch or conflict, to a failing hardware component. Start by going to, downloading and running CCleaner. If it's a glitch, this cleaning program should clear it. It it continues, the first thing to try is removing the battery and see if it's still freezing. Batteries are notorious for causing this. Then try a system restore back about a month or so. It could also be that the programs you're currently running need more resource than 256mb in the memory, so tadd the 512mb chip and see if that cures it. If it persists after you try these, get back to me, and we'll see if we can figure it out.

I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck
