Aquired a used gpsmap180 that worked great...but wanted to upgrade firmware using ac/pc interface cable and lates firmware (
GPSMAP 180 Ver. 4.04/4.05
as of March 29, 2001). my notebook, on batteries went to sleep. firmware on gps got fried. now cant bootup, cant operate gps, cant reload...dead. when I turn on GPS it says on screen "UPLOAD NOT PRESENT" Garmin says unit not supported and can not send it in for repair. This unit came with boat I bought.
It sounds like it has lost its memory battery. Usually you
would get a "memory battery low" message as it is on its
way out but you don't mention that so perhaps it has
completely failed.
The battery is rechargeable - if you leave it switched off
and loaded with a fresh set of alkalines for a few days it
may recover. If not contact Garmin as they have replaced
many memory batteries free of charge even out of warranty.

You haven't specified the router, so this is general advice.
Individual routers may vary in the way they check and update their firmware, so the best starting point is reading the manual.
First, see which firmware version is installed on your router. Then check the support section of your product's website for firmware updates. Some routers are able to perform a check for updates via their web interface.
If you download an update, make sure to use a LAN cable between PC and router to perform the upgrade. Don't use wi-fi! Backup your settings if you're cautious, but as a rule custom settings shouldn't change after the upgrade.

The diagnostic partition is designed to be used by pre-boot BIOS proprietary programs to aid Dell technicians in troubleshooting hardware issues related to HDD, memory, video output, and machine function. The partition is only available via a Dell Installation disk, and, in some instances, may be limited to factory restored OEM drives.
Firmware corruption of HDD is only possible during a flash upgrade of the device. When corruption occurs during a flash upgrade, the device will be damaged (in the tech trade it's known as a "Fatal flash") and rendered inoperable/unusable.
Thus, having personally witnessed many fatal flashes, and, thus, useless hardware, I caution novices attempting to upgrade firmware (especially system or HDD/BIOS) when the devices are working properly. However, if there are serious performance/compatibilty issues with your hardware, by all means, upgrade the firmware.
