Runs for a few seconds, then stops

My handheld Dyson dc 16 cuts out every 3-5 seconds. Rarely it works for a maximum of 1-2 minutes. I can see lots of people have the same problem, but I cannot find the solution. What can I do to fix it myself?

DC16 was the first Dyson handheld vacuum, launched back in 2006. It would have come with a 2-year guarantee, but due to its age it's likely that this has expired now.

Yes I had the same problem on my animal Dysom. There is a button on the top of the dysom that turns the cacuum on. Right beside that button is another one that turns on and off the brush!!! Good luck!!! I accidently one day bumped that button and couldn't get my brush to work but after troubleshooting it, that was my solution.

hello, have you checked to make sure you have nothing wraped around the brushes ? also it sounds like your belt needs to be replaced.

Have you tried calling Dyson? I had a problem with my Animal, and their tech department talked me though the fix. Worth trying them first.

yes the reason the green and red light were flashing the way they are is because its a warning to you that the battery is either no longer good or there is problems with your wireing. Also those vaccumes were designed to not charge when there to cold or to hot as a saftey issue.

1st make sure battery is fully charged.
Next, wash the filter, just follow the instructions in the manual.
If the filter is clogged the motor will try to run but then cut out to protect the motor from damage.

DC31 Animal is a handheld Dyson vacuum with a maximum runtime of 15 minutes, or 6 minutes on Boost mode for really stubborn dirt.

DC31 Animal is great for spot-cleaning furniture, stairs and inside the car, as well as other dusting tasks around the home. But it may not be the best choice for larger areas of carpeting - you may find a Dyson Digital Slim cordless vacuum, or one of our mains-powered upright or canister vacuums is better suited to this type of task.

I'm sorry to hear your DC31 Animal is only working intermittently. When fully charged, this machine should have a maximum runtime of 10 minutes, or 6 minutes on the maximum power setting.

My DC 16 will only run for a second each trigger pull. The battery is fully charged, it has plenty of suction, just wont run for more than a second. I cleaned the filters.
I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few seconds at a time with each trigger pull. My husband called Dyson (Canada) and without hassle they shipped us a replacement part which I just received this morning. The replacement part sent to us is: DC16 Main Body with Rating Plate. It is also under warranty for 1 year. The great customer service makes up for the flaw in the machine. Also, Dyson is aware of the problem. Hope this helps.

I have I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few seconds at a time with each trigger pull.
