Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer
My pixma mp 830 keeps telling me that I have more than one of the black ink cartriges installed, but I don't. Sometimes, if I take it out and put it back in, I can get the printer to work temporarily. What should I do? It's really annoying!
This is not a solution only a further comment. I replaced the Canon with another brand . However before trashing it I tried a third tank. This tank brought the machine back to life and sixty days later it is functioning without problems. My guess would be extremely poor quality control on the circuits on the tanks. Their attempts to maximize profits on the ink has damaged the reliability of the machines. I do not know if it is possible but before replacing this printer check to see if any are available without chip circuitry on the tanks. Good luck D.D.

It certainly is not convenient to be always returning cartridges for exchange. Cannon ought to tell us how to solve the problem. When I purchased this printer it was promoted as the top of the line all-in-one printer. Far from it. I have never had a printer with this type of recurring problem. It is not good enough to be always buying new cartridges especially as the are not inexpensive.

One thing that has worked for me is to leave the printer on. I found this highly reduces the frequency of the error.

Had the same error after replacing my black ink om my MP830.(UO71) I Put some Methylated Spirits on a cotton tip and gently cleaned the cartridge chip (allow it to air dry). This fixed my problem!

That was exactly the problem. I put a new black cartridge and problem gone. Guess I will be saving my receipts in the future. Thanks again!

I have this too, and what other sites said was that this is a problem with the cartridge chip (search for error U071 for more info). Apparently a new cartridge will solve the problem, and Canon will reimburse you (if it's a proper Canon cartridge).
For me it also works to 'shake things up' a bit, but removing the cartridges and putting them back in, but it keeps coming back. :<

Response to Canon critics: I have had my MP830 for 20 months with no trouble until now. It far and away out-performs the three different HP all-in-ones I have had and has given me less trouble as well. Problems like this are certainly annoying, especially when you rely on a product for a home business. However, I work this machine "like a dog" and it has been reliable for nearly 2 years. The print quality and scanning blows HP away. When I have to replace it, I will buy another Cannon.
