You would hold the power button for 10 seconds until the unit turned off or reset. If that does not work please post the make and model of the tablet for further instruction.
First you turn the device off then you press then vol+ and home at same time try using it. It will work

If your Samsung GT-P1000 Galaxy TAB is frozen and unresponsive, press and hold [POWER ] for 8-10 seconds. The device will reboot automatically. If this does not solve the problem, perform a factory data reset. In Menu mode, select Settings ? Privacy ? Factory data reset ? Reset phone ? Erase everything
