Slimtype dvd A DS8A1P eject malfunction in xp professional

All of a sudden the device devolped an interesting flaw after working okay for several weeks, each time the eject was pressed or by software automation activated, the device freezes and then vanishes from the machine and that includes the bios, the only way to get it back is in fact to remove the notebooks battery and pull and replace the power wire and then reboot, as far as I can ascertain, the problem may be either caused by the lack of proper drivers for the sata controller on an acer aspire 5100 using that dvd device or quite possibly hardware malfunction, I noticed in the bios that there is no serial number listed for this device when it is working, the acer pheonix bios is also really basic, being used to bioses with all the bells and whistles I failed to see the point of a bios with such a low tweaking capability, but then many laptop bioses are extremely limited. So the firmware for the device may be corrupt? Or there is some kind of electrical surge which shorts out the device when the eject is pressed (which would be a manufacturers job to fix in my opinion) but it is possible that someone out there has come across the same problem and found a solution, if so please reply?

some useful info not listed here

is the web address where drivers for the acer aspire 5100 can be found
for windows xp including manuals and extra acer software bundles like
acer empowerment etc. which add functionality to the laptop. however
you should be aware that in some instances the dvd which should be
listed as Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P can still act a little wonky after a
while, am currently trying to fix a problem that has arisen with the
eject of said dvd, as the dvd now vansishes from both the bios and the
operating system when eject is pressed manually or virtually.
    a little extra info

flashing the latest bios of the laptop suggests in the readme text that fixes were applied to add fixes to dvd device serial number recognition but this doesn't actually fix the recurring loss of the dvd device, I have noticed that the dvd device itself only vanishes when a disk dvd or cdrom or music cd is in the device when the eject is activated, haven't yet flashed the dvd firmware chip yet but may do so, currently acer is supposedly getting back to me about the problem as the dvd device may actually be broken

my current theory is that the dvd device is causing a power overload when the electronic eject command is switched
possibly a failed capacitor or short circuit within the dvd device itself will keep this post open with more news :)

I have the same problem with Vista.

In answer to Crashster, Bios already reflashed, opertaing system reinstalled six times, once with vista, once with windows xp pro service pack 2 and the four times with linux from scratch, open suse, freebsd, and mandriva just for the hell of it, each OS has the same problem which is why I think there is a broken eject switch, although I am still looking for the optical drive firmware on the net, haven't found it yet if anyone knows where it is could they suggest an address?

    Just an extra comment

on any linux system because the dvd is a writer device you do have to edit related text driver config files in order to mount cds and dvds from it, although some of the newer linux versions appear to have sorted this out, on linux from scratch however, since you have to compile the kernel during install (actually you have to compile everything) but you can add code which allows the dvd writer to recognised by editing said files first

First try downloading the optical drive firmware update and installing it, then try updating your BIOS the same way. Often, this problem is resolved by restoring the operating system as well.

Think the only solution to this problem is to go outside for a cold beer and a smoke.
Then pour sum gasoline on my aspire and light it.
The damn cd-dvd drive has done this thing 3 times now and im using a Xp at the moment so im having problems findin the right drivers.

You may already have the driver on your laptop. Follow the following instructions to install them:
To solve the issue, you have to edit the windows registry
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

Go into your BIOS and see if the drive is recognized in there. If its not, then you'll need to turn off the laptop. Take out the drive from the system and then put the drive back into the system. Now go back into the BIOS and see if its recognized in there. If it is still not recognized then the drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

If the drive is recognized then go into windows into the device manager and see if the drive is there. If its not recognized properly then that means you might either have spyware or a virus on the computer. You can also try replacing the drive as well to make sure its not a drive problem.

Acer Slimtype DS8A1P DVD burner firmware

hmmm..who's NTI?

if you go to control panel, and look under system, you'll see under the DVD, the actual number of the drive. Use that in google, and add the word 'driver' afterwards, and you may have more success.
