Copy the files to you're pc, and if you use windows just go in my computer and right click on the flash disk icon and click format check the quick format box and the press format.

you can try some data recovery software. You can see Recover data from memory card It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.
If above does not work, you may have to format the memory card (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the memory card and recover your files.
Make sure you are logged in as an administrator. I'd also try the thumb drive in a different computer just to make sure the problem isn't with the thumb drive itself. The drive could also be unformatted, or formatted with a filesystem for a different platform that can't be read by XP.
1. right click on my computer then manage
2. click on disk management then right click on the drive which you want to format then click format it will forcely format your card.
There might be a hidden file(s) on the drive that are taking up that space. Open the drive in My Computer, click Tools > Folder Options... On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders. Then check the drive to see if any hidden files or folders are present.
You can also try formatting the drive. Right click the drive in My Computer and click Format...
