Speed is ok at the low setting of 300 but as I slowly turn it up at about setting 1200 the speed is erratic until I turn it back down.

The Olympus is an S2 canister, which part stopped working?
If all of it stopped, the problem could be with the molded outlet plug. Before going to much further, check to see if you are still under warranty. One year parts, 7 years on body and motor. You might want to call Miele Technical Service.

Miele vacuum s5980 no power

your main circuit board is also your speed control the motor should not have a circuit board i don't believe. open your machine up all the way to the motor and cord reel. check voltage at cord reel should be 120 +/- 10. if voltage is correct then replace speed control board.

Miele s571 vacuum cleaner power surges up and down in strength every few seconds from startup.

I just repaired the same problem. It is not the motor. There is a defective capacitor in the regulator. Large grey capacitor should have a value of 0.22uF/275V. It was in my case just 85uF. Changed capaitor and it was OK.

Miele vacuum cleaner not working properly

Is the suction low or ok at the vacuum without the hose attached? If it is ok, then there is a clog in the hose. If it isn't, then check filters, is the speed variable, is the contol set too low. Could be a bad motor, running too slow.

S718 doesn't come up in the Meile parts list, there is a S518, some possibles to check: The switch part #04367102, Indictor lite w/pot. # 05482010, Reel cord 05240302, and motor electronic control # 05408620. Any one of these could be giving you the problem you describe. You will have to dive in and starting with the switch, and eliminate which ever parts seem ok. The reel cord could have bad internal contacts, I have had the pots go bad, but the electronic control more ofter. Which I could pin point it for you.

could be the speed control # 01725370 and would sell for close to $100. Or it could be the control # 01741590 and would sell for about $50
