Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD 1tb external drive

I was working on my WD 1tb drive and it started getting slow and jumpy so I restarted my system and BAM! Now I cant get any of my data from it it only comes up as format drive? I tried to format and it wont do that either. I updated the driver, I used the tools to no avail. I have a win xp2 2gb ram 2.5 processor. I think I got a bum hd. I only have 38gb used on the tb.

That didnt work. I have tried pc doctor, testdisk, WD Backup and I cant grab the files I need from any of them. Seems everytime I shut down my cpu WD Book doesnt agree with it. It takes several minutes after the restart to boot and I am running on `1/2 the tb partician since the format.

I got the exact same problem...I don't care much for the HD compared to the data on it...Some tried to format it as advised and it does not solve the issue...I ran the lifeguard diagnostic and it passed successfully....Very strange !

I found a solution to your problem...If it works, all I ask is that you pass the info to someone else and so on...

It seems that the reason for this is the partition suddenly becoming RAW which translates into "No partition" Why I don't know, but what I know is that there's hope with a program called Testdisk found here:

I'm using it as I type..So good luck, some people reported success I hope I'm one of them...

I feel you're a bit hasty from the way you write...I may be wrong. These things are easily solved but are indeed solvable..What I'm trying to say is that people who reported success within minutes are took me a week of triall and error, but you should have a clue of what you're doing...For example..You should have never attempted a format if you wanted your files back..

Testdisk is the only way to go because despite it's looks it remains the most viable tool you have...Use it analyse your HD try to fix the FAT and if all this does not work then send the log file to Christophe Grenier its designer, he helped me get through the valley of darkness :) Try to give us a more up to date status of your problem...

Cannot format my WD 1TB external hard drive

The hard disk is having bad sectors on its first 3000 sectors.the bad sectors are caused by degradation of the platter of the hard disk.OR the factory area of the hard disk has certain files called SMART, G -LIST and other log files.Unless one empties those log files with a good tool , one cant format ones hard disk.

The electronics in the hard drive is damaged and cannot be repaired by us mortals.
There are companies that can recover data from damaged hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I have a WD MyBook Essential 1TB external hard drive installed with my Mac OSX 10.5.8. The drive is only being used for Time Machine and my iTunes backup. The drive will randomly unmount itself and I get...

I would suspect that either the USB cable or port is the problem. Change the USB port (On the Mac or on the WD MyBook (I don't know if it has more than one USB port) that the cable is connected to and see if that improves the situation, if it still happens change the USB cable. Hope this helps.

My western digital 1tb external hard disk freeze my pc when i conected i must restart after restart is ok

every system has a limit to the devices that can be connected to them.1tb is a very large memory and is capable of making the system or the hard disk freeze causing you to is most probably that your system cannot utilize it while it is on and so has to be re-boot so as to make the hard disk boot up with the very good sign of this is if your system takes a bit of longer time to boot with the hard disk connected from the start,if so my advice is for you to upgrade your the ram and processors should be increased.hope this was helpful?

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-

download and install the software then restart your mac.

WD 1TB working properly for some time

Make sure the power supply (power brick) for the mybook is working. (unplug both ends or the power cable and plug back end)

do the same for the USB cable. Still no luck? Plug the USB connector into a different port on the PC and see if that changes your luck.
