The disk drive (not hard drive) failed on my PS3 and then the video went out, is one a symptom of the other I.E. if the disk drive was fixed would the video come on or do you think that the previously mentioned graphics card over heating is the most serious problem, P.S. bought it used so, no warrenty and I am willing to experiment.
    Thanks, matt

Hey guys got my ps3 on ebay prebroken 20gb would run for a minute then freeze.
Here is how i got mine running, replaced thermal, and moved the power supply. The power supply was and is extremly hot. so i relocated it,right now i just raised it up about 2 inches with some posts and a bannana plugs. later i plan on moving the power supply out of the system so i can put the case back on. there is only 2power posts, and one connector with four wires.

Hi PlasmaMan,

You did the right thing in turning off your PS3 and then holding the power 1/0 button for more than 5 seconds. Since you having true heat problems and your Console is freezing, you have no choice other than to Call SONY at 1-800-345-7669 for support. You may have trouble getting though so email your problem to Sony Support at the following URL http://www.us.playstation.com/corporate/ConsumerServices

I run a Playstation Repair business, and I am unable to get Parts for the PS3. They are very scarce, as Christmas is coming, and my source for parts is getting sucked up at high prices.

    Plasmaman,

I don't have any good news for you at all. The only thing I can ask of you is to get in touch with Sony Support at www.playstation.com and persue a warranty claim. It sounds like you already opened your unit, but I think that every PS3 console in the world is going to have the same problem. The heat transfer compound that aids the transfer of heat from the Graphics Engine to the cooling system is not holding up to the heat. I have a PS3 console in my Video Game repair shop that suffered the same fate as yours. I cannot get another motherboard. The market is all dried up. Even when I buy a Returned PS3 hoping to get a motherboard, it is also shot. Same fate. Dried up heat transfer compound. Stuff turns to dust and will not help the processor get rid of the heat. The Graphic Engine eventually fails due to scorching heat. This is an obvious Manufacturing defect. Threaten Sony with a lawsuit, and they may pay attention. WWW.playstation.com

Sounds like it is a problem with the fan it will only freeze when the unit gets hot if it is ok for the first minute then the best thing to do is replace the fan as this should be fast these heat up really quick if you have the problem as soon as you switch on then their is not much you can do but if it ok for first minute or so then replaace the fan this should solve you problem check the fan is easy to turn and not stiff if it is stiff then the fan needs replacing if it is easy to turn then it is probably the unit itself maybe woth replacing the fan before you try anything else

Its the environment a dusty one? Have you blown out the unit to clean it out by chance? How long have you had it?

Why will my ps3 not workwhen conected via multi-av cable to the RCA jacks?it does work conected to a hd tv via hdmi

When you use an HDMI cable with your PS3, the system is outputting the signal in a digital format. You need to tell it to switch back to displaying in an analog format to use the RCA jacks, otherwise it won't work. To do this, turn off your PS3. Then, once it's off, press and hold down the power button on the system. After a few seconds, it will beep and reset the output signal back to analog. Just make sure only your RCA cables are plugged in when you do this. Hope this helps!

No colour

Hi, Definitely a TV issue for me. Changed Wii to another input on TV and resolved situation. Need now to check how to get my TV to recognize colour on AV2 & 3 because I prefer to keep DVD input as AV1!

I had to use the (RCA) video inputs and not the component inputs. These are the ones made for video games. If you want to use the component input (Component cables are Red,White Red, Green, Blue). If you don't have any, you should be able to purchase them at your local electronics store like Radio Shack or Best Buy. Hope this helps, read below:

TV (This is your cable connection or TV; coax)
Component 1 (Must use component cables for this input/output; Red and White for audio, Red, Blue, Green for Video)
Component 2 (Must use component cables for this input/output; Red and White for audio, Red, Blue, Green for Video)
HDMI 1 (HDMI Cable)
HDMI 2 (HDMI Cable)
Video 1 (Must Use RCA cables, or RCA jacks; Red and White for Audio, Yellow for Video)
Video 2 (Must Use RCA cables, or RCA jacks; Red and White for Audio, Yellow for Video)

I have a HDMI problem with my PS3. I have it

You will need to turn on the PS3 and hook it up with rca so you can access the console menus. Turn it on and get to the main dashboard. 1. Go to Settings -> Display Settings (not video) 2. Select [ Video Output Settings ] 3. Select HDMI 4. Select Resolution 5. Select Screen Size 6. Save the settings 7. Reboot the console. This should resolve the problem. We've seen PS3 consoles that would not reset by performing a hard reset. We were able to resolve this issue through the settings menu though. Let me know if it is still giving you issues.Hank GATpro Repairs

Ps3 works on hdmi but not on rca jacks ???

Sometimes its a pain to re hook up the cords if you are stuck in HD mode and tryin to go back to Regular or Vise Versa, power off the ps3 press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. that will switch the video card back to default settings.

No sound when my computer is connected to my Sony Bravia TV

If your computer has a svga output use input 7 on tv with vga to vga cable and 3.5-3.5 Radioshack 42-2387 cable for audio for best results. If you use the dvi to hdmi on input 6 on tv use 3.5- rca Radioshack part number 42-2551 1/8=3.5mm.

RCA's work fine but HDMI gives me no picture

Have you already tried:

Connect both sets of cables (HDMI and RCA's)

Go to SETTINGS, VIDEO SETTINGS, VIDEO OUTPUT SETTINGS

Choose HDMI if that' what you want to use.

Just follow the prompts.

If the tv supports hdmi you should have no problems.

Just make sure you use the RCA ports for video since HDMI doesn't include audio, just video.

Let me know if this works.

Xbox 360

There are a couple of options you can use.

Are your DVD and cable actually going to the Onkyo first and then to the TV? I am assuming it is, if you listen to the Onkyo when watching a DVD or cable.

The Onkyo receiver you have has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.

Does your Xbox360 have an hdmi output and that is what you want to connect to the Onkyo? Some do and some don't.

If your Xbox has a hdmi output and you are already using the 2 hdmi inputs on the Onkyo, you can not connect the Xbox using the hdmi, you have no more hdmi to connect to, so you must go thru one of the other inputs of the Onkyo.

The hdmi has the video and audio together, the other video options do not. you would need to run seperate audio cables as well.
Your Xbox should have a composite video (yellow RCA jack) output or a component video (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green RCA jack) output.

When you connect the Xbox thru, lets say the composite video of the Onkyo , you will also need to connect the audio from the Xbox to the Onkyo on the same input. It should be right next to the yellow RCA jack or right under it. They are 2 RCA jacks, one red and one white.

You will then need to connect the composite output of the Onkyo to the composite input of the TV.

When connecting like this, you will also need to select the composite input on your TV with your remote for your TV. Your TV should have an input button that lets you go thru all the different inputs to it.

you can also use the component video from the Xbox if it has that. But you must also run the audio to the Onkyo as well to the corresponding audio inputs of the component video input on the Onkyo.

This may sound a little confusing, but remember that the hdmi has the audio and video in one cable, the other video options do not, so you must run additional cables for the audio to the Onkyo from the Xbox.

Also remember whichever video you use from the Xbox to the Onkyo, you must also run that same video from the Onkyo to the TV and then switch the TV over to that input when you want to watch the Xbox on the TV
