We don't see too many of these models anymore.
You either have a thermostat that is sticking or an icemaker timing problem.
The thermostat should be easy enough to check. When it is off for awhile you can try wiggling the thermostat knob and see if it comes back on. I am betting you have already tried this and it hasn't worked so that leaves the icemaker.
On this model of fridge you have the flextray icemaker. The defrost control and timer are built into the icemaker control. You most likely have some worn gears or pins in the timer mechanism causing it to stick in the defrost cycle.
You can still get replacement parts for it but I don't recommend trying to repair the icemaker yourself without some detailed instructions to go by because the mechanism must be timed to work properly. You can buy the complete rebuilt icemaker assembly and change it out. That is what I would recommend. You can change the whole thing cheaper than having someone come out and repair yours.
If you have a Whirlpool dealer around that has an older repairman that remembers how to work on one of these you could probably take the icemaker to them and get it repaired economicly. I would call them and ask before taking it up there because the fridge won't run without the icemaker hooked up.
Hope this helps
Post back and let me know how it comes out or if you have any questions.

Providing your model does not have a digital temperature circuit board, the defrost timer likely is bad. I tried to look your model up and had a problem because I think the make and model is listed incorrectly above your post..
The defrost timer should be near the interior light behind plastic. In the plastic is a plug or a small opening the size of a pencil in diameter. When it stops again turn the black screw about an 1/8 of turn clockwise. If the compressor comes back on the defrost timer will need replaced. If it does not help, try to find the exact model number listed somewhere on the fridge, most times behind and lower right hand corner with the door open, hope this helps, Thanks Sea Breeze

As a Sandy victim, I lost electricity for 8 days. I had packed my freezer section and bought ice but the power went back on 14 days ago, I have had a bad small. Everything in both sections of the Ma

You need to remove everything from the machine - turn it off, clean all the trays, shelves, etc. Completely wipe down the inside of the machine with warm soapy water to remove residue, and then wipe down again with vinegar and water. Once this is done, open up a box of baking soda and put one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator section. Turn on the machine, It may take a few weeks to get the smell out - especially if the smell has gotten into the insulation around the box. Good Luck!

The fridge is not getting cold at all but the bottom freezer seams to be fine

Their is supposed to be a fan in the freezer that pushes cold air up into the fresh food side. Is that fan running? Look for frost on the backside of the freezer. See any? A sure sign of a failed defrost system. You would know for sure by unpugging the unit and waiting 4 or 5 days. Then plugg it back in. If frig works fine then in another 3 weeks it will get iced up agian. You could of course unplug the ice box once a week to prevent ice from forming till you could get er fixed.

Moved frig a week ago and let it stand upright for 5 full days before i plugged it in... it wont cool now and dont know how long i need to run to tryn to cool, dont want to burn up comperssor??? And if oil...

If for some reason the oil didnt drain into the lines then theres nothing you can do. Once the oil mixes with freon theres no turning back. You can remove the back panel and look at your frost pattern on the coils. If you have an even frost pattern across the coils then you should be good to go. If the frost pattern is only half of the coils then you have a leak in the system or your compressor pump is damaged. It should take no more than 24 hrs to come down to temp. Hope this helps _MJ_

1988 Mercedes Benz 300E 3.0L Gasoline F.I. ''Sputtering at Idle

ok..you must have more than one car???? you don't drive the 300 atall im guessing. #1 start car drive up the road and \back to your house. #2 let it idle till problem starts. #3 once it does start with the problem keep it alive with the gas pedal. #4 once your have it safely from dying in higher rpms "rev it" like a kid would, you know like if you were gonna race some one lol. be careful not to over rev or damage engine. you should do this for five minutes no longer than that. #5 let it idle for another 5 minutes. #6 repeat every day until problem with idling decipates. it took mine 3 300e like 3 days of this. if your not going to drive the car once you get the problem out of the way. turn the car on everyday and let it idle for 5 minutes atleast and take it for a short drive once a week. they get lonelly you know lol. later on you can just turn the car on every 2 -3 days and let it idle but still take it on a short drive atleast once a week

My freezer is not cold

Three should be the coldest.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is

Something has stopped the cold air being ducted from freezer side to refrigerator side of things. Possibly duct blocked due to ice build up, evaporator not self defrosting etc. Turn unit off for a few days till it melts and then turn back on. If it was because a door has been left slightly open you will be ok. If for any other reason you will want to have it serviced in the next week or so.
