Hello Failrlane.
You have a bad thermal fuse. You must remove the back cover in order to fix this unit. The thermal fuse can be found near the lamp housing. part number for kit: A-1137-954-A

It is the lamp cover. There is a switch behind it and the post on the cover will slip off the switch. If this switch is not depressed, the tv will go off. No lamp light flashing or anything

most likely, buy you a lamp and install it yourself, the owners manual tells you how to do this.

Sony Grand WEGA LCD with no picture

If this is the model I am thinking of, don't bother fixing it. Call up sony and they will should offer you an new sony bravia lcd tv. You can either get the free one or upgrade from the free one to a bigger one. I guess that there is some recall with the light engine and sony is giving out this offer. This happened to my grandma to her 42" grand wega. The ending result was that she got a 46" 120hz sony bravia tv for, if I remember right, $250. I hope that this helps. Good luck and happy new years!!!

Dark picture on wega lcd

Yes, if this TV has a bulb it is likely to be the bulb.

I am not familiar with this exact model, but other LCD Projection TV will show dim picture after some time. Expected life of the lamps is about 2yrs. After 2yrs the picture will become dim. After 5yrs I am suprised it is even working.

Dirt doesn't cause this problem unless your are a smoker or have the unit "literally" outside. DO NOT try to clean it or let someone tell you to do it because it will cause more problems than it fixes.
