I have a Sony DVD-ROM DDU612 installed in a Windows XP SP3 computer. In the event viewer it says The device, \Device\CdRom1 has a bad block. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

Hi,
do you have software/program that supports DVD.
Try a different DVD/Movie/Disk or alternative.
Also install a program, such as Nero which will give you physical characteristics of the drive.
Finally go to device manager, and remove or uninstall the device, reboot the computer and setup again. This can sometimes remedy the problem.
ensure that the drive is set as Master/Slave. if on the same Bus/IDE channel as a hard-drive. set as master/slave opposite to what the hard-drive is setup as.
Hope this helps.

Which CD/DVD disk are you trying to _read_ ?
Can you read this disk in a different computer ?
If not, then the disk is scratched or greasy or otherwise damaged.
Does the error occur when you try to start to _write_ ?
If so, the "blank" CD/DVD media may not be compatible with your hardware.
Find a "writable" disk from a different manufacturer, and try to write to it.
If that works, then you may need to do a "firmware-upgrade" on your CD/DVD-writer, to make it compatible with newer "blank" media disks.

The device-drivers for CD/DVD units are "built-in" to Windows XP/Vista/7.
So, you have either a "dead" drive, or some other problem (data and power connectors not connected to the drive) or some BIOS-configuration problem.
Control panel, administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cd digital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area
hope this helps
