Hi, I was trying to do system recovery on my old Compaq Presario SR1850NX . I run the two system recovery CDs that I ordered from HP years ago, but the process is not completed I get an error and it is asking me for a 3rd CD/DVD which I never had. I only got 2 CD/DVD for the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 System Recovery. What to do?

It is an old computer that I was not using for a long time, so I just wanted to start from scratch.

Do you think that at this point instead of trying to fix the Windows XP system recovery error, I could clean install the Windows 7? Are the parameters of Compaq Presario SR1850NX , good enough to install Windows 7?

SOURCE: I am in need to install recovery console

Here's How:
Boot From the Windows XP CD
ccb175b.jpg
To enter Recovery Console in Windows XP, you will need to boot from the Windows XP CD.

  1. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.

  2. Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
Press R to Enter Recovery Console
0da5a15.jpg
When the Windows XP Professional/Home Setup screen appears, press R to enter Recovery Console.

Choose the Windows Installation
2ef066b.jpg
The Recovery Console is now loading but needs to know which Windows installation to access. Most users only have a single Windows XP installation so the choice is usually clear.
To the Which Windows installation would you like to log onto question, press 1 and then Enter.

Enter the Administrator Password
df4e182.jpg

The Recovery Console now needs to know the administrator password for this Windows XP installation. Unless you are using a PC in a sizable business network, the administrator password is most likely the same password you use to access Windows XP on a daily basis.
To the Type the Administrator password request, enter the password and press Enter.
Note: If you do not have a password or Windows XP normally starts without asking for one, simply press Enter.

Make Necessary Changes in Windows XP Recovery Console

dd45e92.jpg
The Recovery Console is now fully loaded and the cursor should be sitting at the command prompt, ready for input, as shown in the screen shot above.
Make any changes necessary in the Windows XP Recovery Console. When complete, take out the Windows XP CD and type exit to restart the computer.

  1. When you reach the command prompt (detailed in Step 6 in the link above), type the following command and then press Enter.
    bootcfg /rebuild
  2. The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.
  3. The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).
Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.
  4. The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.
This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.
  5. The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.
Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.
  6. Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

SOURCE: Installing windows XP - Error encountered

Can you reboot and get into windows or is now corrupt?

What do you mean by 'uninstalled XP'??

You cant uninstall it unless you format the drive, in which case the recovery discs are now probably useless as they rely on a folder on the HDD called i386.

Recovery discs normally dont have the OS on them, they rely on the I386 folder to gather info about the computer and then restores it to the state when it was new.

If you can acess the system, reboot and go into the bios and change the boot sequence to CD, then insert the first recovery disc. then save the settings and the computer will reboot and start the recovery process again, this should clear up the error.

If it does not it will be because the i386 folder is missing in which case you can either explore the recovery discs for it or you will have to buy a copy of Windows XP.

SOURCE: can't extract files on System Recovery Disc 4 for Compaq Presario model 6350US

At this point, you can try to clean your disk # 4 and see what happen,
or try to make a copy of disk # 4 (if you can copy the disk) and try again.

or

1) Contact your customer support and ask for a new set of disks.(or only # 4)

or

2) Boot your computer with another OS disk (win XP)

or

3) Boot your computer with some utility disk

My compaq presario recovery cd ask for A:>>what is

Desktop or Laptop ????....
Unfortunately, it is likely that your computer will encounter some form of system error, malware function or hard-drive crash that causes the operating system to become unstable.
To help computer users resolve these issues, HP includes the HP Recovery Manager in each Compaq Presario.
Use the Recovery Manager to recover your system without the need for any additional software CDs, technical support or repair service.
The recovery process should only be used as a last step in troubleshooting your computer, as all personal data files will be erased during the recovery.

Close any programs running on your computer and remove any unnecessary hardware devices that are connected to the computer.
Restart the computer. Press the "F11" key once your computer begins to start up again and before the Windows logo appears.
The HP Recovery Manager will automatically launch.
Click the "System Recovery" option and click "Next." Select "No" in the Microsoft restore window that opens and click "Next."
Select the "Backup Your Files First" option and connect an external hard drive or insert a blank DVD or CD to store the backup files.
Follow the instructions in the wizard to select the files you want to save.
Click "Next" to begin the restore process.
The Recovery Manager will reformat the hard drives and recover the system to a functional operating condition.

I have put in a new HD (exact replica) Old drive is dead dead dead. I ordered the recovery disks from ComPQ. after they arrived and didn't work, I "REVERIFIED" them, CQ says these are the right...

there is no Compaq, its HP
if you get this from HP they work
if you didnt his clone bs. and will not work,
the internet is full of crooks, do not buy from crooks.
who the H3LL CQ, ???

this and only this is your source of media kits, HP.com
not only that but the exact service tag MUST MATCH !!!!!!!
your tag was not presented here so zero help possible. !!!!!

CQ is a model prefix for a COMPAQ like Compaq Presario CQ62
CQ is not company or web site, its a model prefix.
why not start over.,
and ask for help first
say I have this Presario
the tag is below (mine below is random example)
then ask how to load the OS, (operation system)
that is first. do not use non HP media or you ill fail
or worse be victim of identity thief, do NO DO THAT.

HP bought out COMPAQ years ago. 16 long years ago
there is no COMPAQ now, only HP support./

Yes, I have had to do a system recovery on my machine, and it it doesn't take quite as long, but that is mainly due to my 4gigs of ram and quad core processor.

Compaq presario recovery commands

try starting the computer with the disk in the drive, I had to run the recovery disk on my compaq a few years ago, I think the disks pretty much tell you what to do. If you want to wipe it clear and lose everything type fdisk in the start/run prompt field. Then the recovery disk puts it all back to factory .
