Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive does not power on

MyBook will not power on. I have tried different adapters (same voltage and polarity) and nothing works. No light, nothing. I've had it for only a short while, but long enough that I can't return it to the store for a replacement.

You might have a bad Drive or Enclosure. If it is the Enclosure, just remove the drive from the old enclosure, and put it in a new one. There are different types of enclosures, ones for SATA or IDE connectors. Make sure you get the correct one.

If you know how to install a hard drive in a computer, I would just remove the drive from the enclosure, and install it into a computer to test before buying a new enclosure.

Or you can get a USB adapter:

I have the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250GB External Hard Drive. I have moved and lost the power cord. I purchased the DYNEX 500ma Universal AC Adapter as a replacement. When I plug the...

I don't have a photo of the AC adapter, but if you look on it the Voltage and Amperage specifications are;

Input: 100-240VAC / 50~60Hz
Output: 12VDC / 2A

This means the Input power can be from 100 volts to 240 Volts AC, and at 50 to 60 Hertz

The Output power is 12 Volts DC at no more than 2 Amp's. (Amperes)

Asian Power Devices Inc. has a model DA-24B12 that fits these specs.
Also a Wattac AC adapter model number - BAO362Zl-8-A01 will work.

Otherwise just use a 12 Volt, 2 Amp power pack, with a positive on center contact, and a 2mm pin hole

I dont know if it's my computer or the mybook, but when i plug it into the computer its not popping up...but the blue light is on, and it make sound effect that i put somthing into the computer

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB

first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!
Regards

No power going through hard drive

NEVER try random adapters on a drive, the voltage may be the same but the polarity and ampage will be different. is there any burning smells coming from the drive?

WD Mybook I TB hard drive won't power up

It could be the power adapter but you'll need to verify that the wall outlet or power strip you have it plugged into actually has power. If it's a power strip make sure that it is turned on and has power and also plug the adapter into a different outlet on the strip as individual outlets can go bad or have a bad connection.

Western digital external hard drive

I would try the correct voltage adapter and see if you can get it working.

You could remove the hard drive from the myBook drive and plug it into a PC to see if the hard drive is damaged or if it is the electronics/pcb that is inside the myBook drive.

You might be able to salvage just the hard drive (use it internally) and throw away (or keep for parts) the rest of the case/parts of the myBook unit.
