Nope, language does not change that easily.
I've changed my printers language, but it's a lot of work.

Here are the steps needed:

1. You need to download the Filedl32.exe (brother's tool for uploading firmware to the printer) and the brothers Maintenance mode drivers. These can be found here: http://downloadcenter.mustek.co.za/list.php?dir=Repository%2FPrinters%2FBrother%2FOther%2F

2. You need to enter maintenance mode on the printer. To do this, follow the steps below:

  • Press and hold the Home Icon on the printer's screen
  • After you see the firmware info, press and hold the last box (which is empty) until a menu appears
  • Within 3 seconds type the following *,2,8,6,4 (without commas)
  • If you did everything correct you should be in Maintenance mode
A video showing the above can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt2FlT-qulw

3. Now you need to change language. To do this, type 74 and press set mono. In the language menu change the language from 0003 (Germany) to 0001 (USA) then press set mono again. Now the printer will set the language to English and will prompt you with Please DL Rom

4. With the printer in maintenance mode, connect it via USB to your PC in which you already have installed the Maintenance drivers. The PC should recognise the brother printer as Maintenance Brother Printer

5. Now comes the tricky part, you need to get your firmware file, which is not easy. My solution was based on this post: http://pschla.blogspot.gr/2013/08/resurrecting-brother-hl-2250dn-after.html

My issue though was finding the correct values to post to Brother, as my printer was differently. Unfortunately using SNMP didn't help as none of the parameters did show up on snmpwalk.
So I did another trick, since I also have a Mac. I did use a proxy (Charles) and run the firmware update jar file. Now initially I failed, since Brother is using SSL, which made it impossible to get the post data, but I was able to change in the updater tool the BrUpdSys.xml file and change the file URL (FileGet XML node) to something random, http://www.google.com, which allowed me to get finally the post XML data.

Using those and posting those with CURL I finally got my firmware, which I installed.

The firmware request file of mine look like this:

<REQUESTINFO>
<FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO>
<FIRMCATEGORY>MAIN</FIRMCATEGORY>
<OS>MAC</OS>
<INSPECTMODE>1</INSPECTMODE>
</FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO>
<FIRMUPDATEINFO>
<MODELINFO>
<SELIALNO>E71359M3F391200</SELIALNO>
<NAME>MFC-J4510DW</NAME>
<SPEC>0001</SPEC>
<DRIVER>Brother MFC-J4510DW</DRIVER>
<FIRMINFO>
<FIRM>
<ID>FIRM</ID>
<VERSION>M1405200717:EFAC</VERSION>
</FIRM>
</FIRMINFO>
</MODELINFO>
<DRIVERCNT>1</DRIVERCNT>
<LOGNO>2</LOGNO>
<ERRBIT />
<NEEDRESPONSE>1</NEEDRESPONSE>
</FIRMUPDATEINFO>
</REQUESTINFO>

So as you can see it's quite different than the one on the blog post.
Anyway, after posting this I got the firmware URL for the english firmware which is this: http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/LZ4228_M.djf

Note, the above is for the model MFC-J4510DW ONLY. so don't use it in another model.

Note 2: If you want to change the language to something else (not English), you'll need to change the 0003 to 000X in the printer's maintenance mode and also in the <SPEC> XML node above.

You can see the country list codes in this pdf: http://support.brother-usa.com/Virdata/Content/en-US/MFC/Technical/ServiceManual/SM_MFC_J280W_J425W_J430w_J435W_J625DW_J825DW_J835DW_EN_5063.PDF

If you scroll to 1.4.26 EEPROM Customizing (Function code 74)

6. After you have the file, just open the Filedg32.exe, locate the Brother Maintenace USB printer icon and drop it there. It will upload the firmware to the printer and the printer will reboot. After reboot your printer should have finally an English menu!

Good Luck and remember you are responsible for what you do.
To help you I have also uploaded my firmware file on dropbox, so you can use that one and skip the curl steps, if you like!

My firmware file: https://db.tt/5WvbcRyl
My request.xml file: https://db.tt/EUJ74ttI

I've also uploaded the driver and filedg32.exe files in case you can't find them anymore in the website I did provide: https://db.tt/sUgqYP53

    Just in case the website I've shared disappears, to get the firmware file you need to do a curl request: curl -X POST -d @request.xmlhttps://firmverup.brother.co.jp/kne_bh7_... -H "Content-Type:text/xml" --sslv3
