When the typewriter is first switched on the typewriter will automatically set a margin 10 or 12 spaces in,depending on which pitch setting you have. To set a margin say on 20,space-bar in to 20 on the spacing scale and then press Margin Set Key. to set a margin on say, 5 first depress the Margin release key and back-space 5 spaces in and then set then margin as before. Remember that the typewriter will "forget" the settings as soon as it is switched off.

To clear margins, you have to hit the return button to find the left margin, then hit margin release and back space to move the margin left or spacebar to move to the right, then hit left margin button to set the new position. Right margin now. Hold spacebar down and find right margin position, hit margin rease and either spacebar to the right or backspace to the left to the new margin position then hit right margin button to set the new position. Tabs now. hit the tab key, when it goes to the first set tab, hit the tab clear key, then hit the tab key again, then tab clear again etc.
use the "margin left" key to set left margin, and the "Margin Right" key to set the right margin. Move to where you want the margin to be and press the right or left margin keys. to go beyond a margin (to set margins "outside" the current settings, press the MAR REL (Margin Release) button while at the current margin
Use the code key..hold down while you press the left margin set key...if you have to go beyond the left margin press the mar rel key and backspace to the spot you want the margin to be. Then proceed using the code key and left margin set . On some typewriters turning them off resets all th margins..some it does not
You cannot "clear" the margins. You have a left margin and right margin. They MUST be set somewhere even if they are set at the extreme left and right of the carriage.
This part is IMPORTANT!!!
Some functions (like right margin or margin release) may be written in a different color or shade. If they are, you must hold down the CODE or FUNCTION key while touching that function. In any case, the CODE key or similar will be the same color as the function you are trying to access.
Get the printer where you want the margin to be. If you want the left margin set to the left of the current margin you will have use the MARGIN RELEASE key first. This may be labeled MREL or MAR REL or something similar. Backspace to where you want the margin to be then press the LMAR or LEFT MARGIN key. That will set the left margin at that point. Repeat the process for the right margin.
Hope that helps
Typewriters have alimit to how far to the right or left that you can set margins. Once you use the alt & 6 key to bypass the current margin setting then move to the new setting then hold the alt key and touch the 7 key to keep it in the new position.
