You can use an external USB keyboard. If your laptop works good with the external keyboard, then you need to replace your keyboard. eBay is a good source.

You can test it with an external USB keyboard. If the external USB keyboard works good with this laptop, then you need to replace the laptop's keyboard (it is dying).
First download the key finder here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Decrypting-Decoding/WinKeyFinder.shtml then i advice you to download your specific model user manual and read how to recover.
check the other keys (ctrl, alt, Fn) if they are stuck. When you mean apps part, do you mean the apps on the functions keys? If so, you should be pressing the Fn key usually located at the lower left of your keyboard.
I had a similar problem, kept getting french accented letters such as è, ç,à,é when i pressed keys like ", / , \ .... Anyways to solve the problem i pressed ctrl and then shift.
