Mine has been doing the same thing and foound it was the pump cavitating (dry). What caused it on my unit is there was buildup of minerals on the sides of the freezer plate so the ice slab wouldn't slide all of the way down onto the grid. When the unit would start the next cycle the water would ramp up over the stuck slab and down into the ice bin and then the pump would start making the noise. A related problem could be the cutter grid not heating so the slabs back up and results in the same issue. Look up into the freezer plate next time it makes the noise and see if there is a slab partially stuck.

Your water is too hard. Mine did this for weeks and Ge replaced every part on it. The solution was a RO water system for the ice maker. Problem solved and has produced great ice ever since.

You can buy the WR55X10020 Main Control Board yourself if you like. He is possibly adding labor? If the main board is the problem yes it will be needed to allow the ice maker to work properly. Another source here=> WR55X10020 Main Control Board I will be here should you have questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

Rival icecream maker

Perhaps some gears are breaking inside the motor? If you need parts, they are sometimes available here: http://stores.ebay.com/Lauras-Last-Ditch/_i.html?_nkw=rival+ice+cream&submit=Search&_sid=93311479

Loud churning noise. Ice not dropping down.

Need to SCRUB the evaporator tray which is located in the back behind the cutting tray. Remove the cutting tray. Get some cleaning solution that they recommend (nickle safe). Get a green scouring pad from the supermarket and put the solution in it. Put your hand back in the metal tray and scrub top to bottom strokes (not left to right). Do this until the metal is slippery and free of scales. May take an hour while the solution dissolves the scales. After this, it will work like brand new, trust me.
