What you are describing is a "transport" problem.

The unit has a drive wheel and or belts---regardless of use after some time they become worn and if the belts or wheel are slipping or stop the unit will stop and or eject the tape.

I was fixing these from the beginning and they used to sell a kit that by model number had all the belts and the drive wheel or idler--replace them all at one shot.

If the top cover is removed and a tape inserted and Play, FF etc engaged you will see one of the reels in the cassette is not moving.

If you can find the parts the replacement is usually not too hard--either that or try to replace the entire unit.......
