Magic focus does not eliminate the red background to white letters. Can I adjust it manually?

If you have the original remote you can remove the speaker grill and push the tiny blue button to engage the decam convergence mode and adjust the set with the Hitachi remote.

Usually, if magic focus will not improve convergence one of the two convergence chips the set uses (usually STK-392-110) IS BAD.

I can provide the instructions for adjusting in the decam mode but it sounds like you have a bad ic.

Replacing the chips could be a do it yourself repair and I am prepared to assist you from start to finish. Total parts cost on EBAY would be under 25 dollars--I know a seller I use.

I can tell you where to look to identify which chips are in your set------they are mounted on a large heat sink or two sinks side by side with metal fins. The chips are black and will have the STK number printed on the front of them in white letters.

Let me know how you want to proceed and if this information was helpful rate it as "very helpful" as I do this here for free.

I am here to help you.

Tv turned itself off. turn power back on, picture

Your TV is experiencing a convergence issue as indicated by the 3 blinks. The only way to fix this is replacing the convergence ICs. It is not a hard task to replace these ICs. You just need to know how to solder and work on printed circuit boards.

The convergence ICs are mounted on a large heat sink and are marked with codes starting with the letters STK and there are two of them. You need to replace both.

Look for the heat sink with two ICs mounted on it and check the markings.

Once found, cut the IC legs with a small side cutter and unscrew it from the heat sink. Remove the legs left soldered on the board.

Take note of the IC markings for ordering the right part and how it was installed. Don't forget to buy along with the IC a thermal compound.

Check the pico fuses on the same board. Most likely you will find a blown one. These fuses look very much like a resistor, not like the usual transparent fuse, and usually yellow.

Once you have the replacement ICs, put it on the board in the same way as it was installed before. Make sure the screw holes are aligned before soldering the legs into the board.

Put a reasonable amount of thermal grease/compound between the ICs and the heat sink and fix them with the screws.

Double check the board for any splash of solders that might cause a short circuit and damage the board.

My tv is about 5 years old and today my wife smelled something burning now the tv displays a double image.

43uwx10b uses two of the STK-392-110 CONVERGENCE IC chips---what most likely happened is one of the protection resistors around one of them burnt--means both chips need to be replaced and any of the damaged resistors also replaced.

The chips are as you look from the back on the far right side on a large metal heat sink with fins--they are black in color and about 2 1/2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches wide---they will have the STK-392-110 printed on them in white.

If you unplug the set and remove the back cover locate the chips-----behind them(to the left of the heat sink) are about a dozen resistors--what you are looking for is are any of them discolored or white looking in the middle--they all have colored bands which denote their value---if you find even one burnt--you know both chips and any resistors bad need to be replaced.

This is a fairly easy set to do this repair on if you know how to solder etc---total parts cost is usually under 25 dollars--if you have the skill I can tell you what and how you need to do it--considering most shops get for this set about 300 or more for this repair if you or someone you know can do it for you--you can save the set and a lot of money---I have done hundreds of these sets---worked on a lot of them when they were new.

The chips fail because a white grease is applied to each before they are mounted to the metal--it transfers heat quickly to keep them cool--after some years the grease dries out and one of the chips cannot move the heat fast enough--if fails.

The good things here are this set has very few other problems and if it is repaired it should not have this trouble for 5-8 years--lifespan of these parts.

the resistors will be on the lines of these IC's
need help identifying the resistor values?

Samsung HCN4226 Convergence.

Did you remove one side of the resistors from circuit to check them? If you leave them in circuit a blown resistor will test good as it will read the resistance from the surrounding resistors. Usually its the 3.9 ohm resistors identified bu the bands orange, white ,gold and red. and also the 150 ohm identified by the bands brown, green, brown and gold

I am having a shadow/double image problem only on the left side of the screen

Yes its called the Convergence ICs there are two of them they are mounted on a huge heat sink with the part number stamped on them they will have a STK number such as STK392-110. they have 16 pins on them there are two cost around 10 dollars each, you will also need some Heat sink Compound. Just look for the largest heat sink in your tv and thats where they will be. However if you can move both red and blue colors up,down right and left its probaly not your ICs. Do the colors move in all directions? If so you probaly just need to do a multipoint convergence adjustment.via of the service menu. Hope this helps. let me know if you need anything further.

Double IMAGE of RED

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Colors became distorted, then it shut off

Your tv has two problems showing up at the same time, the convergence IC's have loose conections in some of the conecting pins, the Ic's are mounted on heat sinks and can be identify by the markings on its face STK--- ---,3 letters and 6 numbers, one IC for each color, this pins need to be resoldered as well as any other loose conection or overheated areas in the board. The shutdown problem might be a resistor next to the output transformer, its value should be .47 ohms but it might measure open right now,the resistor is at the back edge of the circuit board on the right witch is the deflection board. If you are familiar with tv service you have a place to start but if you are not too familiar be safe and call for assistance from a servicer.Let Us know how it goes.

You have a failure in the convergence circuit. To confirm this, go the customer convergence menu where it allows you to move red and blue crosshairs to align the colors. If the crosshairs fail to move then you probably have bad convergence IC's and/or some open resistors next to them. You can identify the convergence IC's as two large black chips mounted on a heat sink with screws. There will be an STK number on them, probably STK392-120 I think on that model (though not sure without the manual in hand). They will both need replacing with the same STK number as the one written on it. You need to check for open resistors too. They will be lined up infront of the IC's in a row and all should be < 5 ohm in value. You need to unplug all three CRT yokes from the convergence PCB when you measure these as you will read the resistance of the yoke and fail to detect an open resistor otherwise. If any need replaced they must be replaced with exactly the same value - they are critical.
