The sim card unlock code can be obtain from your cellular phone company.

Call the Customer Care of your Network Operator (sim card provider), they will tell you the code. There's no other way or no other means to get the code except from the Sim Operator. They might ask your few questions related to the Sim Card, like your name or your address, tell them promptly and they will give you the puk code for your sim card. It's also important to note down the Sim Card Number (number written on the sim card) if in case they ask you the sim number. You will also be assisted on how to disable from the security settings of your phone.

Note: if you keep entering random/unknown numbers/codes, the sim card will be locked and will be rejected. It'll not be usable anymore. Good luck.

You have to enter it when you are asked to. If you have the code then there's nothing to do for now, just keep it save and use it when you need it. But if you are asked to enter and you don'e have the code, then here's the tips:

You are trying to use a SIM from another Network or Handset but your phone is LOCKED to your old network and/or to a specific SIM card and number: this is why it is asking you for the unlock code to remove the restriction. It you are no longer under contract or obligations (such as minimum total recharge amounts for apre-paid handsets), then you could try to request the unlock code from the original service provider of your handset.
As for asking to insert SIM card, make sure that the SIM is correctly and securely inserted in your handset SIM holder. Also check that the SIM is still functional by inserting it in another handset: SIM card can be permanently and physically disabled if you attempt to enter too many consecutive invalid codes (usually around 10).

you can save all your contacts to you sim if your sim memory is not full. Follow these steps:

unlock keypad, select "contacts" option from menu then select "copy" option in "contacts". Selecting "copy" will left you with two options : 1. From sim card to phone.
2. From phone to sim card.

Then select "From phone to sim card". It will ask "One by one" or all.

You can select any option and contacts will be copied to your sim card. If its ask for "delete original" or "keep original" , its your choice to keep copy of contacts in sim card or not.
