Dell inspiron n5040

This is a motherboard and power supply issue - you most likely cannot fix it yourself. I have attached a link where someone got their system back up temporarily, but it won't last. You need to replace the motherboard ASAP.

Completely remove whatever sound drivers you do have installed, restart, download this: http://ftp.dell.com/audio/R302718.exe

Once downloaded install the sound driver I have provided the link for. If it still doesn't work, please post back here with your DELL service tag. This can usually be found on one of the labels on the underside of the laptop. I may be able to help further if you can provide that information.

Explain the intervals at which it beeps, either 2 short beeps and a prolonged beep. does the hard disk LED blink? if it does its display inverter problem. if no blink on hdd LED its either RAM or cpu failure.

You will have to download ISO image of Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bits, burn it to a cd, then boot from cd to get to the repair mode.

error beeps at start up are hardware faults.

reinstal the driver for it and should work or check in start-my computer-right click manage-device manager -action -scan for hardware changes.

checklist:
1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.
