This type of error is generally caused by interference on the telephone line, an incorrect telephone line connection, or an alarm system or other device on the line.
1) Try re-sending.
2) Try connecting the machine to another phone line.
3) Have the line checked.
You did not say if this was a newly occurring problem. Regardless, take a look at this setup procedure but if you don't have a user's manual, contact Brother's support before altering setup:

The scanner is not receiving light. That is either because paper is covering the scanner, or the scanner light source is not working. In this case, make sure the connections are in place, if so, replace the scanner.
