My audi tt quattro 2004 model yesterday stopped changing gears. it has amanual 6 speed gearbox and as i was changing from 2nd to 3rd gear the clutch pedal stayed in and did not come back to its normal position . after stopping i tried to change gears while parked but no gear would catch. I tried pumping the clutch pedal but no change, after a few tries i started felling a vibration in the clutch pedal if i pushed 1/4 or half way.

You have a worn out clutch disc so the transmission still has to come out to change it.

my 4k cant go to 2nd gear even you do adjustments.what is the problem?

If I've understood your problem correctly.....when changing from 1st gear into second the box is giving a metal on metal crunching sound?

• This would be the syncromesh ring which is not equalizing the speed correctly.
• The problem usually happens when there is wear on the same part.
• Check to make sure that the correct transmission fluid has been used in the box.
• To alleviate the problem and delay the time when it will require attention, use the double de- clutch method of changing gears, especially when the transmission is cold.
• The double de-clutch is carried out in the following way.

1. When in gear and changing from 1st gear to 2nd, change into neutral and release the clutch and then depress again before selecting 2nd gear....It is not required to rev the engine in the neutral position when changing up....
2. When changing down rev the engine when the shift lever is in neutral for each change.

You'll soon get the hang of it and stop the crunching sound, protecting the box at the same time....

There is problem in the gearbox.The sincronizers for a first & second gear are on the same gearswitch.Need to change them.Forget about the clutch.

well i had thesame problem with my 1995 m A6. its the potentionmeter switch which sits on top of the engine and connects to the throttle assembly. if its not working then the gearbox wont change gears until very very late, easy to come off ..only 2 screws.

This is a manual transmission? If so the clutch probably needs to be replaced. When you say "VIOLENTLY" what is going on, what is the road speed, what are the RPMs at? The more specific information the better. And this problem ONLY occurs between gear changes, right? The other times, everything is normal?

I am not familiar with the Audi 2004 TT, but offer the following suggestion:-
If the vehicle has a gearbox separate from the engine, try using a lighter grade of gearbox oil -from my experience with Alfa's, Valvoline Transgear 75W/85 works well in slow synchro gearboxes.

(PS... Learn to double shuffle when changing back to second - then your syncro will last forever).

You need to give the car a scan, preferably with VCDS (or VAS at a dealer). If limp mode is activating (lit up gear selections), then it will be storing codes.
The fact that it works to a degree could be good news, the gear box has likely not failed. Could be the F125 selector switch, which is a common fail at this age.

I am by no means a car expert. My experience is based only on past experience not just with my 2003 audi tt but other cars as well.

What you describe may be your transmission slipping. You should have it checked out asap before you need to have the flywheel cut--I had that happen on another car and it was very expensive to have repaired.

My tt also has some brake problems which cause it to stutter when I get close to a full stop.

The best of all though is the recall of our cars for replacment of the timing belt--according to my dealer a $1700 job.
