Question about Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook

1 Answer

CPU fan operates but laptop otherwise dead ?

I've got a Compaq presario R3000 that's been giving me power problems. When connecting the external power to the port on the laptop it seems loose and the icon for power goes from "lead" to "battery" until the lead is "fiddled" with until the "Lead" icon returns. However, the laptop now simply switchs on with only the CPU fan working but no display and no boot sequence. The battety is virtually fully discharged yet when you remove the external power the laptop doesn't completely die and switch off which suggest there is enough juice in the battery to run the CPU fan but not enough to activiate the boot sequence ? I've removed the cover to the power mechanism and noticed a split in the silver covering to the external power port - could this be the problem ?

I have similar problem. But I tried turning on for several minutes and the fan continues to run...meaning there's enough power to supposedly turn my laptop on. However, I see no POST nor video nor sound. Although the power indicator remains lit with orange color. Would someone help me please!!!!

Remove the battery and plug in the power adapter. Attempt to power on the laptop. If nothing happens, then try holding the power cord, at the jack, at a different angle. Wiggle it a little and see if the laptop will come on. If it does come on, then wiggle it some more and see if the laptop cuts off.

This will determine if your DC Jack is faulty. I have resoldered a bunch of these on this model. Usually the solder around the HOT pin on the mainboard cracks. Thus, you don't get a good power connection.

Now, as far as the laptop coming on with the battery.... how long will it run on just the battery? A couple seconds? Or a couple minutes? Or until you turn it off? If the battery were about dead, then it would come on for just a couple seconds but not POST. Meaning no video or anything. But if it comes on and runs for several minutes without turning off, then a weak battery isn't the problem. It should still POST and show video and all that.

So, even if you get the DC Jack fixed, assuming its faulty, this may or may not solve your POST problem. Never know really until the dc jack is for sure supplying good steady power.

This seems to be a common problem for this model. Some have reported a loose (or dry) solder connection on the mother board where the power socket is attached. Does it seem to work if you push the plug in harder, even for a second? . You should read this thread... http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/50946-2-compaq-presario-r3000-power-cord-issue It may not be your particular issue, but there is a likelyhood that it is. If you are not handy with delicate work, or a solder iron, I suggest a laptop repair shop. Maybe copy or print a part of the thread to clearly indicate what you want. Good luck

My r3000 has a tempermental power supply. it

whatabout the lead that plugs into the laptop ? does the plug in the laptop move easily, with the lead in, Sounds like the actual plug in the laptop is breaking away, the solder around the connector. Sadly to fix that you will have to get it repaired for about £50 to £70, maybe more ?? please make sure the lead from power supply is not loose or a bad fitting.

I can't get the display from my laptop to project to a screen.

If you connect the data projector to your laptop and power it up first then your laptop, the video will switch to the data projector automatically.
If you had powered up the laptop first then you can divert the video information to the external video port/data projector by holding the Fn key and then press F4 key.
You can toggle between the LCD screen, the data projector or both LCD and data project together using the Fn & F4 keys.

My compaq preasrio r3000 black screen cant conect to an external

have you any other A/V ports out ie Svid etc if so try that via an A/V lead, if that works reset your bios settings to minimal settings, if that doesnt work search the 'net someone somewhere has had the same problem! try shining a flashlight/lamp onto the screen whilst booting up, if you see anything on the screen then your inverter is definatly gone and yes it could still be your inverter! your laptop may have software/hardware issues with an external monitor?

Compaq R3000 laptop screen went black

Give this a try -

1. Remove all USB devices such as printers, mp3 players etc etc.
2. Remove the power-cable and the battery
3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
4. Put the power-cable back in but not the battery and none the USB devices.
5. Turn the computer on

Let me know if it doesnt work.

There was a recent class settlement agreed to by HP regarding these models. HP failed to notify a ton of its customers and I've contacted Scott Kamber regarding.. (We were consultants for the suit).. Weve repaired a ton of these and you are not alone. Did you buy the machine new and register w/HP? Just curious...

Compaq Presario R3000 series charging/powering problem

Your power jack on the laptop is probably what when bad. you can take it apart and try to install an new one or you can power the laptop through the side docking port. I wired up a custom connector to use with the ac adapter to make it connect to the to wide metal slots in the docking port.

Laptop won't stay on

it might as well be a internal problem related to power or loose contacts with RAM or the power chords internally.
Better to go to the technician in this case.
Your first Battery would have been fine too..
