I've got a Compaq presario R3000 that's been giving me power problems. When connecting the external power to the port on the laptop it seems loose and the icon for power goes from "lead" to "battery" until the lead is "fiddled" with until the "Lead" icon returns. However, the laptop now simply switchs on with only the CPU fan working but no display and no boot sequence. The battety is virtually fully discharged yet when you remove the external power the laptop doesn't completely die and switch off which suggest there is enough juice in the battery to run the CPU fan but not enough to activiate the boot sequence ? I've removed the cover to the power mechanism and noticed a split in the silver covering to the external power port - could this be the problem ?
Remove the battery and plug in the power adapter. Attempt to power on the laptop. If nothing happens, then try holding the power cord, at the jack, at a different angle. Wiggle it a little and see if the laptop will come on. If it does come on, then wiggle it some more and see if the laptop cuts off.
This will determine if your DC Jack is faulty. I have resoldered a bunch of these on this model. Usually the solder around the HOT pin on the mainboard cracks. Thus, you don't get a good power connection.
Now, as far as the laptop coming on with the battery.... how long will it run on just the battery? A couple seconds? Or a couple minutes? Or until you turn it off? If the battery were about dead, then it would come on for just a couple seconds but not POST. Meaning no video or anything. But if it comes on and runs for several minutes without turning off, then a weak battery isn't the problem. It should still POST and show video and all that.
So, even if you get the DC Jack fixed, assuming its faulty, this may or may not solve your POST problem. Never know really until the dc jack is for sure supplying good steady power.

I have similar problem. But I tried turning on for several minutes and the fan continues to run...meaning there's enough power to supposedly turn my laptop on. However, I see no POST nor video nor sound. Although the power indicator remains lit with orange color. Would someone help me please!!!!
