An object is caught behind the drum of our Kenmore
An object is caught behind the drum (I think) of our Kenmore front load washing machine. It makes a loud "clanking" noise on the spin cycle. How can i remove this object? I'm 99% sure the object is a metal boot band from my husband's military uniform. Please help...we really don't want to pay for an expensive servicfe call!

Are you sure that the clothes are not getting caught on exposed zips.
Why not load some things like towels sheets (without zips/buttons etc) in the washer and see if the issue repeats itself. You should also be able to see if there are any sharp edges or loose sharp items in the drum (mind your fingers)
Either something is caught between inner & outer bowl or drum bearings need replacing. Also check outlet hose going to pump sometimes object caught there causing the bowl to be tight to turn.
* Laundry detergent * Clean cloths * Measuring tape * Plywood (if necessary) * Wrench (if necessary) 1.Verify that the Kenmore top-loading washing machine is completely plugged into a grounded, three-prong power outlet. Reset the fuse or circuit breaker, if necessary; do not plug the washing machine into an extension cord. 2.Make adjustments to the feet on the washing machine if it is shaking or vibrating. The front and rear feet must all be touching the floor evenly. If the floor under the machine is flimsy and cannot adequately support the washer, set a 3/4-inch piece of plywood under the machine for better stability. Load the tub evenly when placing items inside the washing machine and do not overload the tub. 3.Examine the washing machine drum, including between the inner and outer basket, if the machine is clicking or rattling during use. Remove loose objects from inside the drum. If objects are caught between the drums, unplug the washing machine and pull the items out with a pair of pliers, if possible.] 4.the fill hoses behind the washing machine if there are water leaks and ensure the drain hose is connected to a laundry tub or drainpipe. Look at the plumbing throughout the home for drainage problems and correct as necessary. 5.Turn on the water valves behind the washing machine and clean the water inlet hose screens if the water is not running or filling. Do not overload the tub, and use only high-efficiency (marked HE) laundry detergent in high-efficiency Kenmore washers. Note that energy-efficient washing machines often use less water than other machines; this is normal. 6.Choose a wash cycle with a higher spin speed if the water is not draining as expected or items are extremely wet when washing is complete. Reduce overall load size and select a new drain/spin cycle to remove the extra water from the washer. Ensure the drain hose is properly installed on a drainpipe or tub and is not set more than 96 inches above the floor. 7.Reduce the number or volume of items inside the washer tub if the clothes are not rinsed when the cycle is complete. Verify that the water valves are turned on and the correct type and amount of laundry detergent is used.
how did the underwire get there, you may want to remove lower panel please unplug washer before removing panel use a flash light there is a area were coins and other objects fall in to also have a bucket there well be water in the lower unit use something to fish it out lucky it did not get caught in pump
Inspect the rubber seal, and steel drum to make sure there is no foreign object sticking out, which could be tearing holes in your clothes. Also check to see if any of the holes in the steel drum are dented in. or out or misshaped, as this could cause the tumbling action of the drum to tear clothes.

The drum is loose. I pulled the back panel off and the nut is tight behind the drum? could it be the bearing? do I need to change the whole drum? is this a common problem or was this do to abuse.
remove the top (2 screws at rear) then remove hoses. remove rear cabinet half - 2-3 screws at top, 1 screw each side at bottom behind plastic covers and 2 screws at bottom rear. back half of cabinet then slides off.
take wires off heater and remove heater - it is held by 1 10mm nut in centre.
you can then see into gap between tub and drum and locate foreign object and remove.
A service engineer told me he thought there was a piece of wire caught behind drum and to see if it worked its way out. It hasn't because I don't think he's right. On spin the noise is sometimes so loud it sounds like the bearings have gone. Today I removed the fluff filter and discovered what appears to be shreaded grey plastic. If I can get a copy of the machine spec I might be able to discover where this has come from. Sorry this is not a solution. But as your symptoms are so similar check your filter and see if its full of shreaded plastic.
